William Hughes
« on: Monday 04 September 06 23:28 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone.
I'm looking for a possible marriage of William Hughes to his wife Elizabeth (I don't have her maiden name) Elizabeth was born in Builth circa 1843-44.
William and Elizabeth had a daughter Sarah circa 1881-2 also born in Builth, so it is possible that the marriage took place  around 1879-1881.
Elizabeth had a son by a David Howells in 1885 so it would seem that William had died sometime before this.
I realise that there is not much to go on, but this is just a shot in the dark in the hope that someone may be able to help.
Thank you.
Frank.

There are two that came up within a search of 1875 - 1882 on Freebmd

Marriages Dec 1879

HOWELLS  Elizabeth     Merthyr T.  11a 528
HUGHES  William    Merthyr Tydfil  11a 528

***********************************

Marriages Dec 1879

Edwards  Elizabeth    Pontardawe  11a 709
HUGHES  William     Pontardawe  11a 709

**If you have Williams' father you can use it as a reference check to obtain the right marriage cert.

Do you have them on any census?

Hi Cas.
Thanks for your reply.
I don't have William and Elizabeth on any census.
But I have Elizabeth on the 1891 and 1901 census' living with David Howells, and both census' showing her as being born in Builth, also her daughter Sarah Hughes being born in Builth.
David Howells had six children by his first wife who was also called Elizabeth, and a further three by his second wife Elizabeth.
I have a copy of the Marriage certificate of Sarah Hughes to Albert Slater in 1906 and that shows her father as William Hughes (deceased) and a stonemason. Sarah was living at Cefn Coed Nr Merthyr at the time of her marriage
The fact that the census' show both Elizabeth and Sarah as being born in Builth would suggest that the marriage of William and Elizabeth took place there, although I realise that this may not necessarily be so.
Thanks again .
Frank.

There are two possible births for Sarah in the Builth area, you could try contact the relevant reg office or the GRO and quote parents as ref to obtain right cert,

You would then have Elizabeths maiden name to help trace her on census, also to confirm if they did marry.

I have tried to locate Elizabeth prior 1881 & William/Elizabeth 1881 but no luck. they could be mistranscribed but with such common first names it is needle in a haystack.

There were others but these are the only ones reg in Builth, worth trying if your at a brick wall.

Births Dec 1881 HUGHES  Sarah Ann  Builth  11b 80

Births Mar 1882 Hughes  Sarah  Builth  11b 88

hope this helps, good luck

Hi Cas.
You are right about it being like looking for a needle in a haystack with names like this.
both the names that you have found could well be the right ones, as Sarah was given as 9 in 1891 and 19 in1901 so both match up with the census.
thanks again for your help.
