Can anyone help to identify where and how big Tullyorior is as I can't find it on any maps?

Best wishes,

Thanks to you both Colette and Briege.  As my ancestor Patrick McClory was a farmer it makes sense Tullyorior was a rural area.

Thanks BallyaltikilliganG - not sure if they connect at all.

Patrick McClory is on the 1863 Valuation Survey in Tullyorior (it is known in the family that this is where they came from).  Patrick McClory married Margaret McShane.  We don't know when Patrick was born but it would be earlier than 1838. He had sons Patrick (eldest son) and Hugh (born c1855 - the younger son) and also several daughters Brigit, Mary Catherine, Margaret, Annie, Agnes and Sophia. Hugh married at Banbridge RC church.

We had a distant relative Thomas Shaw of Shawstown who migrated to Australia in 1886 on the ship "Energia". Have been able to trace the family back to the 1700's. It was difficult as Registers for the area only started in 1834.
It was found that John Shaw and Ann Byrne were married on 24th February 1858. Our ancestor was born on 29th March 1862 and was one of 6 children.

When John Shaw died in 1866 he was 82

Good luck with your research
Shaw (born Tullyorior in Co. Down then Australia, South Africa and Zimbabwe)
Clark (born Mintlaw / New Pitsligo in Scotland then South Africa)
Taylor / Bruce (born Helenamore / Tyrie / Aberdour in Scotland)
Moody (born Warminster in Wiltshire then South Africa)
Whitehead (born Galton Point / Reigate in Surrey)
Whitfield (born Hull in Yorkshire then Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe)
Ellis (born Mafeking in South Africa)
Hanbury-King (born Stockton in Wiltshire then South Africa)

That is amazing mickwally. The difficulty in getting any information at all on this area has been  really frustrating, and letters written to the various parishes and schools initiate no reply whatsoever. The family history goes back to Tullyorior in the 1850's. The exact area might have been called Shawstown!!!

Our relative Thomas Shaw left Tullyorior for Australia in 1886 on the ship “Energia”. Over the years we have found that John Shaw and Ann Byrne were married on 24th February 1858. The register does not name their parents, and civil registration of Roman Catholic marriages did not begin until 1864.

The following children appear in the register of baptisms:

John    (baptised 27th September or 6th December 1858, the entry appears twice),

James       (baptised 21st July 1860) and

an unnamed child    (baptised 29th March 1862). This last child is almost certainly our ancestor Thomas. It is unfortunate that the register leaves a blank for the child’s name.

Since searching church registers was very time consuming, the researchers looked for the younger children, born post 1864, in the civil registers of births.

They found:

Mary Elizabeth    (born 14th March 1866),

Hugh          (born 12th June 1867) and

Matthew      (born 23rd January 1871).

In addition was found:

Catherine    (born 3rd January 1864) whose parents are listed as John Shaw and Jane Byrne of Tullyorior. As this couple do not appear in the Catholic registers, we can assume that Jane is a mistake for Anne.

From the extracts from the Registers of the Annaclone and Drumballyroney Roman Catholic Church, there is a record of a John Shaw who died on 9th March 1866 aged 82, so I need to be careful here. In the Civil Registers in the Banbridge Registrars Office, Banbridge District,  there is a record of a another John Shaw who passed away on 31st October 1900 aged 76 years so he could also be associated with the above children

In Griffiths Valuation of Tenements there are two properties that were held by a John Shaw:

John Shaw Junior held 13 A and B. Ecclesiastical Commissioners House & Land 4a 3r 20p (about 7 acres)} £8

John Shaw senior held 14. Ecclesiastical Commissioners House, same house, offices & land 10a 3r 20p over 10 acres)} £11 5s.

There is so much information that I have, but best to start slowly. Do you know the area the family came from??
