Tighes originating from Roscommon
« on: Tuesday 05 September 06 20:55 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me on my family tree research? Tighe is my mothers maiden name and I am trying to trace back her fathers side of the family. The most recent Tighes were all born and lived in Stoke on Trent but we always new they originated from Ireland, I recently managed to trace far enough back and found my ggg grandfather was John Tighe born 1824 in Co. Roscommon, Ireland. He married a lady called Margaret Brammer who was from England. I really want to find out more about him, his parents and any siblings he may have had if possible. Can anyone help?

Hi Louise

Have you come across a William Tighe who married a Bridget Tymon?  He was born around 1820 and I understand he was from the Roscommon area.  Could he be a brother of John?

Best wishes

How about this one for your Bridget?

"I have an Ann TIGHE's from "County Sligo" born early 1840's. Her parents were William and Bridgett (Tymon) TIGHE. I also have a sister B. Linda TIGHE born in "Ireland" 1856. I found Ann married to a Michael McCaffrey in Concord, MA in the 1870 Census, she died in 1896. "

My great grandfather was Patrick Conboy born June 23 1865 in Dromod, registered at Rynn, County Leitrim. He married Mary Josephine Armstrong born April 15th 1868 Tubbercurry, Sligo County in 1892 in America. Patrick had several brothers who also emigrated to America and a sister who married a Tighe and remained in Ireland. Their parents were: Patrick Conboy and Catherine Keeffe, called Kitty. My great grandfather also had a grandmother McKenna and a great grandmother Catherine Quigley. I have info about the descendants of the Conboys in America, but none for the Conboy ancestors. As for the Armstrongs, the brothers (6) of Mary emigrated to England and she went to America. Her parents were Mary and Michael Armstrong. I found two possible parent pairs, one in Ballyglass and one in Carrownaleck. I am grateful for any tips about these families.

I was always under the impression that Tighe was a relatively common name in Roscommon in the 19th century, I've found it very difficult to find specific details in relation to my ancestors there at that time as I don't have a lot of information to go on.

My great-great-great grandfather Patrick Tighe was born in Co. Roscommon around 1841, and arrived in India in the early-mid 1860s as a British Army soldier.  He remarried a Wicklow woman after the death of his first wife, and his son (born c. 1865) also married in Ireland, so I assume he was wounded in India or discharged relatively quickly.  He's on both the 1901 and 1911 censuses in Dublin - however, I have no idea where in Roscommon he was born, so I've little to go on.  If by any chance someone is looking for an ancestor with these details, drop me a PM.
