Hi Ambly
I am researching these people, mainly Hurl John Fincham, for someone else via e-mail, so I haven't yet got any certificates to look at directly, but it seems that Hurl was pretty reluctant to divulge much info on his first marriage certificate about his background. Probably a bit "shotgun", given the lack of detail and Hurls subsequent rapid departure following his sons birth. This is the marriage and birth which the gentleman I am looking for is directly decended from.
I have been told that the second marriage certificate, which arrived today, shows that Hurls father was a labourer named Henry Fincham who was deceased by 1918. The addresses for the couple are given as "this parish", so no help there. I can find no record for a Henry Fincham appearing on the 1901 or 1891 census anywhere with a son even remotely similar in name to Hurl. Hurl was a Blacksmith on both certificates.
Witnesses may yet prove the key, though. For the second wedding they were Mary Ann Askew and Charles H Gee.
I googled Mary Ann Askew and found a possible suspect who is leading to a very intriguing clue which I want to work on a bit more, otherwise it will sound mad. Surfice to say, at the moment, that it involves the death of two soldiers side by side in the trenches of the First World War.
Hurl and Louisa's children were John and Catherine, and I am just about to apply for their birth certificates which may hold more clues. It is vaguely possible that John died in 1971, but I need to wait for the birth certificate before leaping to that conclusion...
I have looked through the Death register at leasth 3 times from 1924 to the present and I didn't spot anyone with a name like Hurl Fincham other than Harold, and I can disregard him based on census details, which leads me to the conclusion that Hurl either changed his name (possible), was never recorded (highly unlikely), or emigrated (quite likely)
More research once the birth certificates arrive may yet give some indication of Hurls ultimate fate
Thanks for the info about George Barkham. Much as I suspected.
Glen
