Louisa Barkham, born in US about 1890
« on: Thursday 07 September 06 14:47 BST (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if anyone would be able to find a birth record for Louisa Barkham born about 1890.

Her father was George Shaw Barkham and her mothers first name was Catherine, if this helps.

On the 1901 England census (RG13/1757 Folio 116 Page 4) she was listed as born in America US and was aged 11, although the rest of her family were born in England.

I am assuming that her father George was working in the USA at the time of the 1891 English census since there appears to be no record of the family on that.

I am looking for a location to possibly help to find her and her husband Hurl John Fincham later on, since they seem to disappear from all records in England after 1924, so possibly emigrated.

Thanks

Glen

Hi Glen

Background:
George S BARKHAM  age 29 b around 1852 Suffolk, a coalminer
Wife: Catherine age 28 - b around 1853 Manchester
Dau: Mary Ann age 3 - born around 1878 Durham
Dau: Susannah A
In 1881  they are in in Dawden, Durham

Found this Indexed record:
WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY lists:
George S BARKHAM on  "A List of Immigrants Who Applied for Naturalization Papers in the District Courts of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania".

A lot of English Coalminers went to Allegheny Cty, PA to work in the mines there.
But I cannot see an Immigration listing for him/them - though in those times such a record may not record the names of the wife & child/ren let alone George's full forename and mid-initial.

Unfortunately the 1890 US Census was practically destroyed in a fire.

I see from your other posts that Hurl John FINCHAM is proving a bit elusive - he was first married 1912 to a BAKER, had a son and didn't stay around very long after that - and you have recently come upon the next marriage to Louisa....

What was his address at time of Both marriages? It is possible we can locate who was living at those address' in 1901 - a bit of a longshot, but may lead to family.
Who were the  witness' at time of both marriages?
What was his Occupation?
In neither marriage did he give any details as to his father's name?

Could this record be worth following up:
Louisa Fincham born: 7 Apr 1899,
Died 1990 age 90
Registration District:Greenwich , London, Vol 12, Page 913

I know you can't post the names on here, but have you had any luck tracing the 2 children you believe Louise may have had to FINCHAM - PM me the names if you want another set of eyes to look for them!

Cheers

Hi Ambly

I am researching these people, mainly Hurl John Fincham, for someone else via e-mail, so I haven't yet got any certificates to look at directly, but it seems that Hurl was pretty reluctant to divulge much info on his first marriage certificate about his background. Probably a bit "shotgun", given the lack of detail and Hurls subsequent rapid departure following his sons birth. This is the marriage and birth which the gentleman I am looking for is directly decended from.

I have been told that the second marriage certificate, which arrived today, shows that Hurls father was a labourer named Henry Fincham who was deceased by 1918. The addresses for the couple are given as "this parish", so no help there. I can find no record for a Henry Fincham appearing on the 1901 or 1891 census anywhere with a son even remotely similar in name to Hurl. Hurl was a Blacksmith  on both certificates.

Witnesses may yet prove the key, though. For the second wedding they were Mary Ann Askew and Charles H Gee.

I googled Mary Ann Askew and found a possible suspect who is leading to a very intriguing clue which I want to work on a bit more, otherwise it will sound mad. Surfice to say, at the moment, that it involves the death of two soldiers side by side in the trenches of the First World War.

Hurl and Louisa's children were John and Catherine, and I am just about to apply for their birth certificates which may hold more clues. It is vaguely possible that John died in 1971, but I need to wait for the birth certificate before leaping to that conclusion...

I have looked through the Death register at leasth 3 times from 1924 to the present and I didn't spot anyone with a name like Hurl Fincham other than Harold, and I can disregard him based on census details, which leads me to the conclusion that Hurl either changed his name (possible), was never recorded (highly unlikely), or emigrated (quite likely)

More research once the birth certificates arrive may yet give some indication of Hurls ultimate fate

Thanks for the info about George Barkham. Much as I suspected.

Glen
