TULLY in Bexted
« on: Friday 08 September 06 08:00 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone

I'm drawing a complete blank on any information relating to the Tully's in Sussex. Nobody seems to be researching them.

My relation was born around 1789 in Bexted according to the 1851 census, his name was Thomas TULLY and he was a chairmaker.

He married a Susannah SHARVILL/SHARVEL, who came from Sevenoaks in Kent. I haven't found them in the 1841 census, but in 1851 and 1861 they were living in Southwark in Surrey. They have one son that I know about, George Sharvill TULLY born in Lambeth in 1828 - I'm posting this on the Surrey site also, in the hope that somebody can find them in 1841, but was hoping that somebody might be able to give me some leads in Sussex.

Kindest reards
Lewy

Have you any idea where Bexted is?   I live in Sussex and have never heard of it, nor can I find it on a map.

I have just thought that it will probably be Buxted.  Say it in a Sussex accent to a London enumerator and that is what you might get.
Buxted is on the A272 road east of Uckfield.   There is a site about the Sussex Weald - sometimes a link at the top of the Sussex board so try that.

Hi Lewy.

Just in case you are searching for the wrong place, I cannot find a
'Bexted' in Sussex, there is a Bexhill and the National Burial Index2
has the name Tully (variations) in Bexhill and surrounding parishes.

I used to install 'Red Barell' signs around Sussex many years ago and
the name Bexted does not ring a bell.

Looking at the Sussex Marriage Index, which has pre 1837 marriages, there are Tullys in Buxted.

Yep! that will be the place 'Buxted' and the NBI2 has a few
burials listed for Buxted, St Margaret.

IGI Batch has a few references in Buxted for the name Tully.
