1841 census transcription error?
« on: Sunday 10 September 06 07:27 BST (UK) »
In 1841 this Cook family were living in Cross Arthurlie Village, Neilston:

John Cook, 35, Ireland, Cal Prin
Margaret Cook, 35, Ireland
Elizabeth Cook, 15, Ireland, Bleacher
Mary Cook, 13, Ireland, Bleacher
Robert Cook, 11, Ireland
William Coo, 8, Ireland

Parish No 572 Ed 13 page 10 Parish Neilston Renfrewshire

They're a perfect fit for my Cook family, except that I know that Mary was born in Dunbarton and Robert in Paisley.

I'd like to think that the transcriber made an error and put born Ireland as the birthplace for all of them, when in fact it was only the parents. Does anyone have access to the image to check that it does say Ireland for the children too?

Regards
Jan

Jan,

There are at least 2 places that this error could have been made:

1) The enumerator could have been given the wrong information.
2) The transcriber made a mistake during transcribing of the census.

You should be able to view the page from the enumeration book at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis.

I guess if the image shows the children born Ireland too, then I can only hope it was one of those two cases. :-)

Many thanks for looking for me. :-)

I've checked the IGI and found that Mary Cook was born in Carnmoney Antrim so it must be the right family. Funny that she would say she was born in Dunbarton in every census.

Not yet, that's still on my list of things to do :-)

I've since found Mary Ann's parents married in Carnmoney too.
