QUICK Family of Exeter
« on: Thursday 14 September 06 05:36 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information about the QUICK  family of Exeter.   My great grand mother was Mary Jane Quick, daughter of John and Ann, nee Boundy, QUICK.
Mary Jane was born about  1827 in Exeter, and was in Ampthill, Bedfordshire, as recorded in the 1851 Census.  She married my great grandfather in Ampthill in 1852, and soon after they migrated to Australia.
On wedding certificate, father named as John Quick, builder.   On her death certificate he was listed as a carpenter, mother named as Ann Boundy, and birthplace of Margaret Jane was Exeter.  In 1841 census I found a John and Ann, in Crediton, this time as an Ag. Lab.

Any info gratefully received

Ingham from Oz.

I have John Quick and Ann at Bowden Hill, Cannonfee, Crediton Parish in 1841

1841 they are listed as age 45 (rounded down) with the following children

Ann  7
George  5
James  15
John  15
William  15
Emma  8 months

There is also a Mary Quicke aged 15 (possibly rounded down) working iEast Street, Cannonfee, Crediton (probably as a servant)

All listed as Born in Devon. Anyone aged 15 was actually between 15 and 19 years of age.  Wonder what happened to the kids between Ann and the 3 older boys? Thats an 8 year gap.

No Mary Jane listed.

Now in the 1851 census

John & Ann are still in Crediton. John is a Ag LAb aged 58, Ann is aged 57. They have living with them George age13 and Emma aged 10, and a grandson John aged 3.

Also in Crediton is John Quick aged 33, a Butcher, married to Hannah with children George 4 and Elizabeth 1.

I think this John is the son of John and Ann.

William is listed as a Cordwainer in Crediton, aged 25, born in Crediton, his wife is Thirza and they have a son William aged 1.

This William fits for being John & Ann's son as well.

So far noone is listed as born in Exeter.

BURROW, BICKHAM, EVANS, SULLEY, STONE - Devon
STEPHENS, MALLET, ADAMS - Cornwall
HANCOCK , BUSSON - Somerset
MCCALLUM, MCDIARMID, MCNEILL - Argyle, Scotland
WALLS, SUTHERLAND, SIMPSON - Orkney, Scotland
FAIRBAIRN - Fife, Scotland
THOMPSON - Aberdeen, Scotland

Sometimes you need to come forward before you try to go back to a further record.
If you look for other Quicks on the 1851 census born in Exeter at a similar time to Mary and who have parents called John and Ann or John or Ann, you find this family in Tiverton.

1851 census HO107 1889 folio 215
Newport Street Tiverton  Devon
Ann Quick  50  Exeter, Devon,  Head   Widow Dressmaker
Thomas Quick  16  Exeter, Devon,  Son  Lacemaker?
Sarah Quick 14  Exeter, Devon,  Daughter  Servant

(perhaps the daughter and son's occupation are around the wrong way)

There is no question on the English marriage certificate which specifically asks whether a person's father is dead or not at the time of marriage. Some people were asked the information many were not. Some volunteered the information, many did not (since they weren't asked) and some officials wrote it down as extra information and many didn't. The absence of the word deceased on a marriage certificate therefore does not signify a father wasn't dead.

1841 census HO107 255/18 folio 12 page 19
Wellbrook Tiverton  Devon
Ann Quick 40  Devon dressmaker
Jane Quick 15   (space empty so neither known whether born in or outside the county)   Sick minder
Thomas Quick 6  Devon
Sarah Quick 4  Devon

So a possibility here that the elder sister was Mary Jane Quick (or Margaret as she was enumerated on the 1851 census in Ampthill and on also on her marriage) - enumerated here in 1841 as Jane.

Marriages Sep 1852
Quick  Margaret Jane     Ampthill  3b 603
either
Arnold  Shadrach    Ampthill  3b 603
or
COOK  Thomas     Ampthill  3b 603

The IGI has a possible baptism for Sarah Quick with parents Ann and John

SARAH ANN QUICK
Christening:  19 MAY 1837   Saint Paul, Exeter, Devon
Father:  JOHN QUICK
Mother:  ANN

So was Sarah of the 1851 and 1841 censuses full name Sarah Ann?

From FreeBMD

Marriages Dec 1856
Hill  William    Tiverton  5b 763
Quick  John     *  5b 763
Quick  Sarah Ann     Tiverton  5b 763
Warren  Mary     Tiverton  5b 763

Two Quick marriages together, but not to each other.

1861 census RG9 1617 folio 47
1 Coles Court St Mary Magdalen  Somerset
William Hill 26  Twerton, Devon, Head  Married Cabinet maker
Sarah Ann Hill  24  Exeter, Devon, Wife Married Dressmaker
Mary Jane Hill  2 Taunton, Somerset,  Daughter
Ellen Hill  2mths  Taunton, Somerset,  Daughter

The other two baptisms at St Paul Exeter for John and Ann's children are

ABRAHAM THOMAS QUICK
Christening:  25 DEC 1834   Saint Paul, Exeter, Devon
Father:  JOHN QUICK
Mother:  ANN

ROBERT QUICK
Christening:  24 APR 1832   Saint Paul, Exeter, Devon
Father:  JOHN QUICK
Mother:  ANN

There are also these earlier baptisms for a John and Ann Quick in Exeter

MARGARETTA QUICK
Christening:  08 OCT 1826   Saint Edmunds, Exeter, Devon
Father:  JOHN QUICK
Mother:  ANN

JOHN QUICK
Christening:  19 APR 1829   Saint Edmunds, Exeter, Devon
Father:  JOHN QUICK
Mother:  ANN

Marriages Sep 1855
Quick  Abraham Thomas     Exeter  5b 175
either
Burridge  Prudence Emma    Exeter  5b 175
or
Ewings  Ann     Exeter  5b 175

Unfortunately Sarah Ann was born just before civil registration and there doesn't appear to have been any other children after her (at least not on the IGI or ones that survived until the 1841 census)

FreeBMD (not a complete index) gives several possible deaths for John Quicks in Devon pre the 1841 census in the Exeter area (if he died after civil registration).

Deaths Sep 1837
QUICK  John Hansford    Exeter  10 62
Deaths Dec 1838
QUICK  John     Exeter  10 61
Deaths Jun 1840
QUICK  John     St Thomas  10 163

None for Robert Quicks.

The evidence doesn't prove it is the right family. It just gives you other possibilities to explore.

Regards

Ann gives a different birthplace on the 1861 census.

1861 census RG9 1479 folio 101
Frog Street Tiverton  Devon
Ann Quick  60  Cheriton, Devon, Head  Widow Dressmaker
Sarah Ann Hill  3  Tiverton, Devon, Boarder

http://www.witheridge-historical-archive.com/promise.htm

1871 census RG10 2171 folio 18
2 Castle Street Tiverton  Devon
Ann Quick  68 Cheriton, Devon,  Head  Widow Dressmaker
Mary French  69  Cullompton, Devon,  Lodger  Lace Reeler Silk factory

Deaths Mar 1880
Quick  Ann  79  Tiverton  5b 372

The 1861 census does show there was a Boundy born in Cheriton in the early C19th

1861 census RG9 1393 folio 73
6 Waterloo Place Exeter St Sidwell  Devon
Jno Boundy 60  Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, Head  Married Gardener
Elizth Boundy 66 Whitstone, Devon, Wife  Married
Mary Jane Boundy 22 Exeter, St Sidwell, Devon,  Daughter  Unmarried
Thos Jno Robson Boundy 2 Exeter, St Sidwell, Devon,  Son

On the 1851 census like Ann, John gives his birthplace as Exeter.

On the 1841 census a John Quick aged 12 was working as a servant in Cheriton Fitzpaine.
There was a John Quick in Tiverton aged 21 birth place unknown, servant to a farmer in 1851.

Devon Family History Society has a marriage index which I believe has a full county coverage 1813-1837, but their baptism index only begins from 1813.

Must have a "senior's moment" yesterday when I put my message on Roots Chat - as I said about the wedding certificate, her name was Margaret Jane,  not Mary Jane.

Thank you Valda for all your info.

To Burrow Digger, I am just trying to get as much background info about her as possible.

I found Margaret Jane in 1851 Census in Ampthill, Bedford, listed as an Infant School Mistress(British).  Any idea why the word Britsh would have been included?

Hi Valda,
Little random but I got hold of a butchers bike/delivery bike, I found out it was from an old shop in Exeter queen street, the bike is very old and still has all its sign writing, it says H quick and co boot factors,
When I looked it up I found out his name was Henry from Exeter
