KENTLETON surname quest
« on: Friday 05 November 04 22:45 GMT (UK) »
My was 4 x Great Grandfather was Thomas KENTLETON, born in Ireland c1787,
but this  surname seems to be very uncommon in both Ireland and England. There are only 15 individuals with the surname in the 1881 census of England and Wales, all of  whom I believe are my family. In all the various lists of Irish surnames I’ve come across on the Internet, the name “Kentleton” does not appear.

There is a family story that the KENTLETON name came from a ship from Ireland that sank off Liverpool. Apparently a baby boy survived and was found and given the ship's name as his surname.

Could anyone suggest how I might pursue this further ?

It would be helpfull I think to find a Kentleton that is older than  Thomas Kentleton, born in Ireland c 1787.

Could Thomas be the first, could the spelling of the surname become inconsistent before 1787? (I see his name spelt as Kendleton in the 1851 census) He does seem to be the first (unless someone can beat this date).
