Landsman?
« on: Friday 05 November 04 23:32 GMT (UK) »
My 3x Granfather was a Merchant Seaman and I have a copy of his record. If I'm reading it correctly, it says he went to sea as a Landsman.  Does anyone know what that was/is?  :-*

Thank You
Kimi

My dictionary of Old Trades Titles and Occupations describes a Landsman as being a sailor on his first voyage :)

Hi Kimi ;D   Can you tell me how you got your merchant navy records, I am trying to find my ancestors', have contacted the Newfoundland site where they should be, only to be told that I need the name of the vesssel that he was on, and I don't have that information.   Did you know the vessel?  and if not, how did you discover it?     Lindy

Thank You Mo - you're a star  :-*.

.Lindy, I got them from the National Archives.  If you look on their web site, under service records, it should tell you how to go about getting yours.
