Rayners pub Hessle Road.
« on: Friday 15 September 06 22:47 BST (UK) »
Hi, Does any hullites have any info on Rayners pub on Hessle Road, was it called after the landlord at the time? I have Rayner in my tree, and would be interested to know the history of the name. Cheers...

Hi Cookson

Yer, the Star & Garter became known as Rayners after one of it's licensees.

The 1933 Kelly's Directory for Hull lists the Star & Garter as 325 Hessle Road and the licensee was Henry Rayner

not a lot, but hope it helps

Hi Cookson,

Rayner's (aka The Star and Garter) is a famous pub in the old fishing community of West Hull. It is situated on the corner of West Dock Avenue and Hessle Road and was named after a famous landlord, as Bee mentioned, Henry Raynor. The pub (as far as I know) is still standing.

The following is taken from a book called Hull-The Fishing Years.

"..whenever men where thrown out of Rayners for fighting, a few large constables were usually on hand, and Henry Raynor sometimes showed his appreciation with a flask of whiskey or a bottle of beer for the constables. This quite improper reward could not be collected openly, indeed some officers were hostile to the practice but at some convenient time, an officer might pay a friendly call on Waistell's, the outfitters, where the little token could be collected..."

I'm sure I have further info about the pub in a book on Hull somewhere, I'll have a look and get back to you.

Ian :)

It was last week and still open for business (I went by it, never been in it)

Hi..When the pub was called the "Star and Garter" my uncle, Charles Richard Knott, was the landlord up until the mid 60's, before that he had Criterion also on Hessle Road.

I don't know if any of you know of him but after Star and Garter" he later went on to run "The Sportsman" pub on the corner of Lee Smith Street, Hedon Road, John Flannagan (HKR's Flash Flannagan's brother) was a barman at "The Sportsman." The Mermaid in Bethune Avenue was also run my Charlie Knott. He was well respected and admired for the work he did.
