McFadden
« on: Saturday 16 September 06 06:44 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, Another name to add to my never ending list .
I am trying to find information [even a smidgen would help] on a Peter McFadden who was born about 1863. I found the family on the 1871 census at 31 Edmond Street Westgate, Newcastle on Tyne. It lists the father as John,39, Police Constable born Scotland, ELizabeth, wife 36, born Corsenside, and Peter, 8 born Newcastle on Tyne.
I haven't found them on the 1881, HOWEVER, there is a Peter,18, with Ann Atkinson. It has Peter listed as Grandson. I am interested in finding out if Elizabeth was Ann's daughter, if she was, she had her before she married, Ann's maiden name was Keith, and she was born at Corsenside, and would also like to see if there is any further info on Peter. I haven't been able to find a birth registration, nor can I find a marriage of John and ELizabeth, either would have helped.
Many thanks Twiggy

The age is ten years out, but the occupation ties up with that on the 1881 census. (I have looked at the original image, and it definitely says 38)

Dear Jennifer,
I can't thank you enough for the information you have found on Peter McFadden. I have to rely on what info I can get from Ancestry.com through the LDS living in Aus makes it a bit hard to find things. I have also found that a lot of names are not on the census films I have seen. as I had not been able to find anything on the 1861.
It will be another line to try and follow through.
Many thanks again. Twiggy

Hi Twiggy,
I've just found this thread.  Better late than never.

I have no idea why the 1871 cnesus says James is John, but all else about the entry fits.
1881 James MacFAYDEN, the police sergeant, is a widower, aged 49,  born Scotland, and living at 31 Edward St, Westgate, Newcastle.
His son Robert John is living with James' parents, Donald & Jessie (SINTON) McFADEN at Horsley Cottage, Rochester.
Son Peter I'd not found beyond 1871 until I found this thread.
James' 1st wife Elizabeth ATKINSON had died in 1875.
I believe James remarried in 1884 to Rachel GIBBINSON, and it looks like he died in 1891 qtr 1, aged 59.
1891 Rachel McFADEN is a widow with son Robert J, 18, clerk with her, and living at 31 Edward St.

I've looked at the 1901 census image referred to above, and I cannot turn it into Peter at all, it really does look like Telis, with a clear dot above the i.
However, the theory that this is Peter does look good, as I've certainly not found a death for him in England between my 1871 sighting and this 1901 one.

Corsenside is a place connected with my other SINTONs, and James' brother Peter was at Corsenside in 1851.

Regards
Lorna
