1891 Census Lookup Toronto
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 21:46 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone

I am looking for my wife's ancestor, Job Watkins, who was born in Herefordshire, England about 1851.  By 1891 he was in Canada, pobably in the Toronto region.  I don't know his wife's name (if he had one) but he had a daughter, Ella Watkins who would be about 6 years old in 1891.

I will be grateful if anyone can find them in the Canadian 1891 census.

Thanks in advance

Roger

1891 Canadian census is a difficulty because there's no national index; looking around, I can't even find mention if anybody's composed an offline index for the Toronto area.

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/tor83.htm - there is the marriage of a Job Watkins here, in 1883, in Toronto, residence 'Parkdale'.  Listed as 31 and b. Hereford England so birthdate/place is about right.  His wife was Elizabeth Jeffries, b. Cheltenham, aged 29 and daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth.

www.ancestry.ca, although I don't have access, gives a couple hits for Job Watkins, including his marriage, a 1893 death for him, and what looks like the birth of two children, Albert and Ella Louise (dates not given when you do a free search, sadly).
Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Jorose

Thank you so much for doing some research on my behalf.

The record on the Rootsweb homepage for Ontario Marriage registrations that you have found is definitely the correct Job Watkins . Job WATKINS, 31, stone cutter, Hereford England all fits exactly.

The data on Ancestry Canada also fits exactly down to his death in 1893.  I wonder if someone who has a subscription to Ancestry Canada could locate the complete details.

Thank you once again for your help.

Kind regards

Roger

Hi Tom and Karen

Thanks for all the information on the Watkins family that you have dug up for me.  I have now got most of the information that I would have got from the 1891 census plus more besides.

Thanks for all your help.

Regards

Roger
