Thanks a lot Peter.
George Roberts was a shoe maker so that must be my Ellen. I have already ordered 3 certs. for Joseph Roberts (with ref. from ancestry), my gt grandfather but haven't got the right Joseph as the parents weren't George and Martha.
The following may seem a stupid question but I only found out a couple of weeks ago that my gt grandfather came from Cheshire, I had no idea and I know very little about Cheshire. As I live abroad I can only order certificates if I can pay by credit card. I suppose I will find Ellen on Ancestry now I know the date but Martha will be at the cheshire records office I suppose. Do you know if I can order a cert. from them and pay by c. card?
Sorry to be a nuisance and thanks again for your help.
Pat
Hi Pat
Because Martha was born before 1837 there will not be a birth certificate, only an entry in the parish registers, this will not give any more info than you already have. The mothers maiden names were not usually listed.
If you are searching for certificates in Cheshire I would advise you use the
http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/ with this site once you have found your B/M/D you can print of an application sheet (they also take credit card payments) and pin a note to the certificate stating you only require it if the entry matches the known parents names, it is quite aceptable to do this. Saves a lot of wrong certificates.
I have searched the parish records site and found a birth for an (H)Ellen Williams 17/10/1805 F. Samuel M. Martha. this looks to be their first child, so a marriage should be before or close to that date, if indeed they did marry.
Good Luck (don't forget Liverpool when your searching)
