Query: "out of wedlock" (completed)
« on: Tuesday 19 September 06 19:36 BST (UK) »
Hello, sorry if this is posted on the wrong board, but looking for some advice.

I have heard that if a woman/mother was unmarried at the time of registering a child, if the father did not attend the registration, his name was not put on the cert.  Is this info correct?

Would it apply to a Cardiff birth in the 1920's?

Any advice or input appreciated.

Many thanks

Cas

The situation appears to have changed little over the years.

There is a summary here:

I think this does apply to 1920's as my Grandmother was born out of wedlock in 1922 and her father does not appear on her certificate as she was born in a salvation army young mothers hospital. Apparently though the hospital records for there may contain info so if you have a similar situation it may be worth looking into. I am still trying to find the right dept. months on though!!!

Thanks Karren,

Helping research for an 80 yr old lady.  The couple (her parents) did marry 8 yrs later, she also had other siblings prior to the marriage.  Think that he fathered them all, but was reluctant to marry, or there were probs with one being Cathlolic and one Church of England.

I have suggested she tries to trace her baptism to see if it gives anymore info.  Her mother secretly also had her christened in the Catholic Church so there could be two records.

Have done quite well on the tree, both sides, she is very pleased although suprised her full length birth cert had no father, and that they married much later, also the possibility that this may not be her true paternal line.   :o

Some things we will never get answers, such is family history!  :-\

Well, my mother was once a Catholic(when married to one) and she says that they may have discreet records of the father as named by the mother as they would have frowned upon a child out of wedlock then. Worth trying to chase up if she knows the church/district!
