WW2 Service Records - what could they contain?
« on: Wednesday 20 September 06 08:07 BST (UK) »
Some years ago, probably about 15 (give or take a year or two), we applied to the MOD (on father in law's behalf) for some information on grandfather's WW2 service.

The information we received was very scant ie. a few typed lines - something like enlistment date, transferred to training, discharged due to being medically unfit before seeing active service.  He died later on during the war of TB.

Does anybody know what kind of documentation we are likely to get for somebody who didn't see active service if we reapplied ???

I can only tell you what we recieved, all very mixed up and in no particular order. There is my grandads application and signing up form dated 1931 giving physical description and identifying marks. There are casualty/regimental conduct sheets (loads of in my grandads  - he was a bit of a rebel!),
military history sheets (general eports on when and where posted),field conduct sheets, and his release sheet dated 1945.

I think we paid £35 and recieved about 30 photocopied sheets, ours are a bit muddled because he saw active duty and was attached to different regiments in WW2.

These records meant a lot to us because we never knew our grandad and they were therefore worth paying for, however, I thougth that for £35 they might be a bit more organised than just phocopied and thrown in an envelope with no guidelines as to understanding them!

Thanks for replying Kat :)

Sadly father in law is now deceased.  He and his brothers were orphaned and place into care just after WW2 (when their mum died) and were given no family momentoes/photos or anything so a physical description of his dad would be nice.

I wonder if this would be the same for WW2 when there were masses joining up would anybody know ???
