His CWGC entry:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=408525

Based on the cemetery where he's buried, he was serving at the aerodrome at the time.

I was simply going by what is says on that entry. Click on the name of the cemetery and it'll bring up more details.

As he has a very common name, try searching the MICs using the surname Smith plus his service number 26173 in the box where is says Other Keywords.

He is there!

Ok, let's see what this tell us.......

He had the War Medal & Victory Medal. So he didn't serve abroad in a theatre of war till 1916 at the earliest, otherwise he would have also had the 1914-15 Star.
Below that it also says he's on the SWB list. This is the Silver War Badge (Silver Wound Badge if you prefer). This means he was wounded at some point and invalided home. You may like to look him up in this list at some point, but it's not online unfortunately. Means a visit to Kew. This would give you his enlistment date and discharge date (but not where he was wounded).
And I think this is about all from the MIC.
