Trying to Find a Rooney (with great difficulty)
« on: Friday 22 September 06 21:15 BST (UK) »

Hi

I have tried unsuccessfully to find James and Elizabeth Rooney (nee Taylor).  They came over to England from Ireland between 1854-1856.  I believe this as all the censuses 1861-1901 state the place of birth of the children as:

Leticia Rooney 1850 in Ireland

Rosanna Amanda Rooney 1854 in Ireland

Sarah Jane Rooney 1856 in Egremont, Cumberland.

I have tried looking for James and Elizabeth but as they both have very common names it is worse than looking for a needle in a haystack.

So I have decided to try and find their two daughters who I believe have more unusual christian names.

I don't even know which end of the country they came from never mind the county so would love some advice as to where to start.

Please please help me.

Regards

Hi,
I have  a feeling I've replied to one of your Rooney postings before, but here goes again anyway!
If you look on the IGI familysearch.org site, you will see that there is (some of ) the family of James Rooney and ELizabeth Taylor:

James Rooney, born 1833, Cumberland England
Married Elizabeth Taylor in Oct.1853, CUmberland

Children:
Lotitia Rooney, born 1849, England
Sarah Jane Rooney,b. 1856, England
James Rooney,b.1854, Cumberland, England
John Rooney,b. 1864, Cumberland, England.

Rosanna Amanda is not mentioned in the list here. And there seem to be gaps of some years, so maybe there were other children too.
If the IGI is correct, (and you do have to be a bit cautious, mistakes are known to have been made), then the father, James Rooney, was born in Cumberland in 1833; no birthplace is given for his wife Elizabeth Taylor. And as you have seen Ireland mentioned in the census, this could mean that Elizabeth Taylor was Irish, and although married in Cumberland, they returned to her parish in Ireland perhaps where they possibly had a couple of their children, before returning to Cumberland again.
Clearly there is a discrepancy somewhere, either in the census returns you have seen, or in the IGI - either or both is possible!
But at least it gives you something to think about!

Good luck,

Ok
Rosanna Amanda Rooney is listed on the IGI, to the same parents, but in a separate entry - how inconvenient, this does happen with the iGI though, they don't always list all the children in the one entry when you find the correct parents.
Rosanna Amanda Rooney, b.1853, Cumberland.
