Hi Elaine,
Sorry for late reply, have been away.
Thanks very much for finding John b.1809 Berwick, he may well be one of 'mine' although it seems to be quite a common name and also can be Bartram or Bertram, they keep changing.  My William Bertram was born 1833 in Horton, Northumberland, his father named in 1855 on Wiliam's marriage certificate as John Bartram, a pitman, that's all I know about him.

Are the Bartrams you're researching in the same area?  I might be able to help you if you let me know names & dates.
Regards, Barbara

Hi Barbara,
My Bartram's are in Berwick Upon-Tweed 1802 Marriage: Joseph Bartram & Barbara Ferguison : children so far Joseph 1805, Ann 1808, John 1809, & Charles 1811(my ggg grandfather) who married in Stepney London 1837..haven't got any of the certificates for the northumberland dates to give more info, Although I do know that Charles was a "sail maker " & I don't know yet whether the whole family moved from up there to down here.. There's not a lot on line pre 1837..They do seem to have kept the same spelling though
Regards
Elaine

Hi Elaine,
Have just looked through the 1841 census for Berwick, some of it is so faded you can't make much out, but I did find one Bartram family there, could well be your ggg grandfather's brother, Robert, b. abt.1806, daughter Barbara perhaps named after Barbara Ferguison. Perhaps the others had also moved to London by 1841 or else they were in the faded bits!

1841 Berwick upon Tweed HO107/844/5 folio 13. pp 18-19
Lyalls Row, Berwick
Robert Bartram 35  born in county
Ann Bartram 40 not born in county
Barbara Bartram  4  born in county
Robert Bartram    2  born in county
Thomas Bartram  6m born in county
(Robert's occupation is a bit faded but there were fishermen living in the same street)

Barbara,

Browsing through Census 1851 Surname Indexes for Northumberland, I came across this...

C1851 Byker* Piece 2408 Folio 209
All Bertram
John 48, Sarah 42,
Robert 21, Janet 13,
John 11, Ann 9,
Sarah 5, Alex 2**

* Byker was one of the 5 Districts that made up City of Newcastle, lying east of the city centre.

**Indexes usually used many abbreviations. So this "Alex" is either an abbreviation or his full name ?

As you can see the Byker Alpha Index did not include relationships, occupations or birthplaces. Also anyone in a household with a different surname, would not show up.

If you had interest in this Bertram household, I could (within next 2 weeks) get access to census pages.

Hi Michael,
Sorry for late reply, have been away.  Thank you for looking, don't know if this is "my" John Bertram and family but will make a note of them - it does look as if there is a missing child or two going by the gap from Robert to Janet - and  I really want to find his son William b. abt 1833 Horton, he would be abt 18 in 1851 and I had hoped to find him still living at home with his parents.  Haven't yet found them in the 1841 census. He married in 1855 at Easington so in 1851 I suppose he could have been anywhere!  If you do get chance to see the 1851 census and can see where the family were all born that would be a big help
Many thanks,
Barbara

Hi

I can't beleive I have just found this site & these posts about my Gibson family.

I am decended from Thomas Reid (Reed) Gibson & Alice Evans and their son Henry Evans Gibson.

I have not made progress for several years, other than the possibility of Thomas Gibson & Isabella Brown being Thomas' parents.

It would be great to hear if you are still researching.

Best Wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Welcome to Rootschat!  :)

We seemed to have moved away and onto Bartram/Bertrams on this old thread, but I know the original query was about your Gibsons, so I hope KA sees this and gets in touch, hope you will be able to share information

Kind regards,
Barbara
