National Roll Of The Great War - Help!
« on: Sunday 24 September 06 19:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

My Grt Gandfather Frederick Charles Woodward served in ww1.
I know a lot about his service record.

I recently obtained his abstract from the National Roll Of The Great War - it states that he volunteered at the outbreak of the war.

But i know he enlisted into the regular army in 1911??
It is definatelythe correct man - Theres werent Many Frederick Charles Woodward's in Sundon Village, where only about 80 people lived!

Can anybody shed any light?

Jim

Jim, does the brief on the link above answer your query ie. that the information supplied to the "National Roll of the Great War" was compiled from information submitted by subscribers ie. families etc. rather than official sources so could be subject to error/misinterpretation?

Or is it possible that your man left the army and then re-enlisted?

Thanks Casalguidi

Just checked it out - none of mine on there.  Guess the family weren't interested in submitting.

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

I suppose it could be a mistake - bt presume highly unlikely as it would have been a close family member who entered the description.
He actaully joined the army aged 17, 1911. This suggests he joined in 1914 aged 21.
I would assume a close family member would have known the difference.

Is it possible he left the army and then re-enlisted. I dont think so, well not in this case.
On his Medal Index Card/Discharge Card his enlistment and Discharge dates are on the same card -1911 to Dec 1918 (The same discharge a stated on the National Roll Of The Great War.
