Having done this within the last 12 months, I can suggest that the thing to do is to contact the registrar for the district in which the death was reported and ask for a certificate. I do not think there is any other way in which information can be revealed and of course you must say that you are a relative to get a certificate. Of course if you know someone in the police, they can find out this sort of thing very easily, but perhaps you might not want to pursue this route.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, I have tried FreeBMD  but it was not there. Maybe I could call in at the local newspaper on a day out.

Someone can get the details for you from 1837online or a similar site, then you can order the certificate.  They are currently indexed up to the end of 2004.  In January, they will be updated to include 2005.

There is no problem at all getting a recent death certificate from the GRO:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

I ordered and received one from them for my uncle (who died within the last 5 years) recently, and no questions were asked;  it was just like ordering one from 1840.  They couldn't possibly have known he was my uncle.

If it is within the last two years, and you can't wait until January, you might try the obits etc.
