Alexander Leitch - British Navy seaman
« on: Tuesday 26 September 06 22:54 BST (UK) »

Alexander Leitch was born 1810 in Port Glasgow, and on his death lines in 1869, it stated his father was Alexander Leitch, British Navy seaman, and his mother Margaret McNeillage.
I wonder if anyone could give me any information on Alexander Leitch Sr. as to where he was born etc or his wife Margaret McNeillage, as I have found nothing so far.

thanks in advance.

Blessings Margaret

Hi Margaret

The only Margaret that I can see in Renfrew on IGI (assuming she was also born there) is:

MARGARET MCNEILAGE  Christening:  09 APR 1775  Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland/ 27 FEB 1782 Port Glasgow, Renfrew, Scotland (Two entries, probably the first Margaret died).
Parents: Father: GEORGE MCNEILAGE Mother: MARGARET GRAY

Do you know what children Alexander and Margaret had, that might offer you some clues if they followed Scottish naming patterns. I can't easily see any children for them on IGI.

Regards.

Monica

Monica - thanks for that  new information. I have thoroughly searched the IGI, and found nothing. Neither Alexander nor Margaret are mentioned. The only offspring I know about is Alexander born in 1810 in Port Glasgow. He later married a Jane Brown in Abbey Paisley in 1830, and they are not mentioned on the IGI either.  Perhaps they went to one of those evangelistic churches that many weavers attended.  I only found Alexander's family on the 1851 Census, and I have been busy ever since trying to track them all down.
Around the 1840's I think Alexander and Jane must have moved to Glasgow, as the two youngest members, James and Malcolm were born there.
I have tried to find them on the on-line 1841 Census, but I guess their district in Glasgow (Bridgeton/Camlachie?) hasn't been entered yet.
However, let me thank you again for the information.
