Morrisonshaven, Prestonpans
« on: Wednesday 27 September 06 09:10 BST (UK) »
Several of my Hewitt relatives seem to have lived and died at a place called Morrisonshaven in Prestonpans. Does anybody know what this is please or how it came to be named?

thanks,

Lindsay

Hi Lindsay,

If you Google "Morrison's Haven, Prestonpans" you'll find much information. I tried to access a website address but
it was not recognised.

Hi Lindsay,

I just tried a search for it, and it seems it was once known as Acheson's Haven, but the name changed several centuries ago. It was a harbour near Prestongrange in East Lothian, but it seems to have fallen into disuse during the early part of the 20th century.

Hope that helps

Morrison's Haven can be seen on the 1854 Ordnance Survey map if you search for co-ordinates 337277,673744 at www.old-maps.co.uk . To see the same location on the current maps, use the same co-ordinates on www.streetmap.co.uk and click on the OS Grid marker.

An area of the land there now forms Prestongrange Museum. See their website for more info.
