James Wood 1756-1836
Jemmy was the first commoner to become a millionaire ,but was famous for being a Miser !!
He is mentioned in Dickens book OUR MUTUAL FRIEND AND MAY ALSO INSPIRED SCROOGE !!!
He became rich by running the Gloucester old bank in the town .
There are many stories about his meanness and him dressing in shabby clothes ,he even turned down becoming Mayors job because of the expence ...
It is said no one liked him and is said when he died crowds threw stones at his coffin during his funeral .......
