1871/1861 Census Oxford - CULLEN
« on: Sunday 01 October 06 01:46 BST (UK) »
Would someone be able to look this family up for me please.

In the 1881 Census the family is in Charles St, Oxford and listed as :

Henry Cullen - Head - b abt 1830, Wisbeach, Cambridge
Mary A Cullen - Wife - b abt 1825, Oxford
Henry Cullen - Son, b abt 1865, Oxford
Mary E Cullen - Dau, b abt 1868, Oxford
William E Cullen - Son, b abt 1870, Oxford
Arthur Cullen - Son, b abt 1873, Oxford

I'm particularly interested in Henry Cullen's birthplace and whether it changes at all.

Henry was married twice:
1 - Sarah Sophia Jenkins who died in 1876
2. Mary Ann Harris, married in 1876

Many thanks
Denise

Hi Denise and Pam

In 1871 they have been indexed as MELLING - and enumerated as CULLING - the
enumerator's writing is quite flowery in some respects and messy in others!

1871 - St Giles  Oxfordshire
County/Island: RD: Headington , Sub-RD : St Clement
REF: Cass: RG10; Piece: 1436; Folio: 130; Page: 16
ADDRESS: G-gle?  --ield?  Mill
Head: Henry CULLING 40, Cab Driver, b Wisbeach Cambridge
Wife: Sarah CULLING 38, b Oxford
Son: Henry CULLING 6, Scholar, b Oxford
Dau: Mary E CULLING 3, Scholar, b Oxford
Son: William E CULLING 1, b Oxford

But having trouble finding either of them in 1861  ???

Cheers

Hi again

He's hiding very well  ;D

But this looks like him in 1901 - age is a bit out, but maybe the Landlady gave the information?

1901: St Ebbe Oxfordshire
RD :Oxford
REF: Class: RG13; Piece: 1385; Folio: 54; Page: 6
ADDRESS: 1 Godfrey's Yard
Head: Charlotte ARNOLD 70, Wid,  b Oxford City
Boarder: Henry CULLEN 75, Widr, Cab Driver, (Groom)b. Wisbeach Cambridge
Boarder: Henry JONES 70, Widr, Cut(ler?) b. NK (Not Known)
Boarder: Thomas RANDALL 49, unm, Porter, b Oxford City

Which seems to fit with death:
Deaths Mar Qtr 1906 Headington
REF: 3a 588  - Henry CULLEN age 81

Is this 2nd Wife death:
Deaths Mar Qtr 1893 Oxford:
REF: 3a 526 - Mary Ann CULLEN age 70

Which means they should be about on 1891.....

Cheers  ;D

Well,  I'm 100% stumped for Henry in 1851/61 and Sarah Sophia too!  ??? ???

Everywhich way, can't find em!

May be the marriage record 1864 is the only way back & will have a clue -in:
Marital Status for each
Their father's names & occupations
Her  maiden name
Address' at time of marriage
His Occupation
The Witness' names

Cheers
