As if it isn't tricky enough to find the right Smith ...

Searching for a hard to find person (not a Smith) I found a possibility in Emily Amet. She turned out to be very clearly Emily Smith working as a servant in London - so if you are looking for Smiths - try searching for Amets.

I've been lucky with my Smiths.  The first branch comes from a small village.  My second branch comes from Leeds but then on the 1851 census they coughed up the truth that they were from Huddersfield and there was only 1 John Smith at the right time.  The third branch was from Birmingham but originally came from a village so they were easy to find too.  Tracing the descendants of siblings is near impossible though.  I've been able to get into the mid 18th century with all branches.  The men in the second branch were either nail makers or paper stainers so it wasn't too hard to find the brothers' families.

I haven't had anyone misspell or mistranscribe the name though.
