Lookup up help please, needed desperatley
« on: Sunday 01 October 06 22:28 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Is SKS able to look into this marriage record for me please. I live in NZ, so am unable to pop down and look at the archive myself.

CARDON, THOMAS      REED, MARTHA    04/15/1860      A  /11   2647     PIKE

I am trying also to locate the birth of this couple's children

John G or C Cardon

Elizabeth Kate Cardon       B: 1861 C Illinois, likely Pike.

If anyone has access to the USA 1860 Federal Census, could they please look up the following,

Thomas Cardon named as living in PIKe Illinois, USA-1860 US Frederal Census, stated as born 1837 Circa.

This family immigrated to NZ 1865. I am at a loss of where to start to look for records. Any assistance appreciated greatly.

Cheers
Del

Hi DelBoy  :D
I have found your man I think:

Chambersburgh township, Pike county, Illinois (6th July 1860)
Ref:  Roll M653_219, page 309, image 66

Thomas CARDON     23   M   Labourer   England
Martha CARDON   20   F         England

Looks like they are boarding or living in the household of Levi BUTLER, 29, a farmer, and his family.

If you need any more help, just yell  :)

Hi Prue,

Thank you so much, this record does make sense to me at this end also.

The family somehow managed to catch the ship Matoaka to NZ in 1865, which departed from London, ENG.

How would I go about tracing their movents from ENG to USA then to ENG again ? such as passenger lists.

Also is there any way I can check the marriage, without having to purchase a cert in case its the wrong one. If the marriage I found is correct they must have travelled to USA as single people or with other family memebers.

We had thought they were born in ENG, but dont have any real proof.

My thanks again

Del

Hi Del,
No worries at all  :D

What a journey they had  :o  I'm sorry I don't know how to find US immigration/emigration records, but you could post a request on the Emigrants to USA board and see if you get some info that way.

I found the marriage on the IGI:

15 Apr 1860, Pike, Illinois
Thomas CARDON
Martha REED
IGI Batch #M524643

The 1860 census is pretty good proof that they were born in England.  To have definitive proof you would need to find them on an England census.  I will have a squiz at 1851 for you if you like.

Cheers

Del, do you have any info about Thomas or Martha's parents?  There are two Thomas CARDONs around the right age on the 1851 for England - one in London, and one in Lincolnshire.  And 32 Martha REEDs!

Hi Prue,

I have no idea at all on any parents details, but am hoping that Thomas and Martha may have named their children after parents, the name John is predominent. 2 sons named John.

Cheers

Hello Del,
I've had a look at the USA castlegarden website - this shows arrivals prior to Ellis Island being opened for immigrants.  Unfortunately there's CARDON(s) shown.  However, quite a lot of names were mis-spelled so sometimes you have to be adventurous with the wildcard*

There is a Thomas Caran who arrived in USA from England 1853 but when I summoned up the full Rochambeau shiplist there was no sign of a wife.  As often happens a stranger will write what he hears so sometimes it helps if you know how to speak the migrant's dialect - e.g. my Yorkshire dialect would pronounce the surname Cardun :-

http://www.castlegarden.org/

Thomas Caran  Occupation Farmer
Age 18
Sex M
Literacy U
Arrived 9 Jun 1853
Origin England
Port Liverpool
Last Residence
Destination USA
Plan Unknown
Ship Rochambeau
Passage Unknown

Good luck
