This reminds me of rather sad family story - a relative many moons ago committed suicide - the story being she was pregnant. One of the suggestions has been that the man involved was the local preacher.

On a slightly different tack - I fell in love with the minister's son when aged 15   (but I eventually had only a daughter, so it will never be known if I may have named a son after him     )

So anything is possible - Enjoy learning to speak Scots - most of the language is well beyond me - I still can't understand why a land deed has to be called a sasine (or is that sassine).

I was surprised to find my previous post removed for copyright infringement and have learned that it was considered a partial cut and paste.  Unfortunately I had not retained the original message as I had typed it right into the message box.  So that is a new lesson for me.....must save all Rootschat posts in a Word document so I can refer back to any that I have made!!

Now for another attempt.....Reading the thread minus my previous post sort of leaves you wondering doesn't it? I mean...what was able to be discovered in some alternate sources ?

The British Isles Vital Records Index is a terrific resource.  Oftentimes it can produce records that are not found in the online IGI and that proved true in this circumstance.  All rights are reserved by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of course.  By performing a parent search on the names of James WALKER and Mary NEWLANDS you are easily directed to a listing of 5 christening records of their offspring.  Whether this is a complete listing I have no way of knowing but it is complete as to what this particular index provided.  The large gap in years between Aiton and Janet would seem to indicate some possible missing births.   All christenings were recorded in Dolphinton, which is in Lanarkshire, Scotland.  These particular records are sourced to a Family History Library Film #1066588.

Agnes, female, born March 16, 1823 and christened March 30, 1823.
Aiton, male, born May 15, 1825 and christened June 12, 1825.
Janet, female, born June 17, 1836 and christened July 17, 1836.
David, male, born September 15, 1838 and christened October 15, 1838.
James, male, born May 25, 1841 and christened June 10, 1841.

There is a Bridgend in Lanark from old maps - Grid Ref: 268500,670500 
whether it is yours or not?  Dolphinton (I don't think there is a "g" in it) is Grid Ref: 310500,646500 

Bridge-End, Dolphinton is marked on the 1965 one-inch Ordnance Survey map, but not on the current Landranger. If you go to www.streetmap.co.uk and search for Dolphinton (without the 'g') it will produce a map of the village. Bridge-end is the building represented by a pink square at grid reference co-ordinates 310815,647165 - you can also search using this and it will come up with an arrow pointing to it.

You can use the same co-ordinates on www.old-maps.co.uk which will take you to the 1864 map, where Bridge-end is named.

The Bridgend at 268500,670500 is a red herring. There are lots of Bridgends all over Scotland.

Sasine is a term in Scots Law and means 'the act of giving legal possession of feudal property, infeftment'. It is from Latin sasina

I'm sure you know that Scots Law is different from English Law. There are loads of legal procedures and terms like sasine which occur in Scots Law but not in English Law, and some which occur in English Law but not in Scots Law. For example there are no coroners or inquests in Scots Law, and no Procurator Fiscal in England.

Dear Keith,

I am sorry to pop up in an old thread, but am researching Aiton Walker who is my great x2 grandfather's brother.  Most of the Walker's stayed in the Lanarkshire / Dumfrieshire, Peebleshire area, but can you tell me how Aiton moved to Liverpool and where the reference to his family can be found.  I am unable to prove this from all my various links / usual sources.
