Service record-Manchester Regiment WW1
« on: Thursday 05 October 06 11:11 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

Can anyone assist me? I wish to find the record of a Walter John Howarth who served in the Manchester Regiment in WW1. No 375919.

Unfortunately, I can not visit the National Archives as I live in the Isle of Man.

Hope someone can help.

Cheers,

Jacqui

jacqui, his original army number was 2936,at some point before 1917 he was probably wounded/sick,he was renumbered along with the other territorials in 1917,it looks like he was already in the army before the war started, possibly joined late 1912 or 1913,he would have been about 21 when the war started, born bolton, resided in oldham, mack

Hi Jacqui
Pte WJ. Howarth 2936, is in the Medal Roll for the 1/10th(Oldham) Battalion Manchester Regt, he landed on Gallipoli on the 23rd July 1915, so going by this, he may have come from the 2/10th(Oldham) Battalion, as a draft, also on the same page as WJ Howarth, is 2935 Pte G Howarth, is he a brother of WJ?.

A very good book on the 10th(Oldham) Battalion is "Amateur Soldiers" a history of Oldham's Volunteers & Territorials, 1859-1938. ISBN 0-9518098-9-X

Hi,

That's great!

How kind of you both to look up that information for me.  It definitely fits as Walter was born in Bolton in 1892 & brought up in Oldham.  Interesting about G Howarth, I have no record of a G Howarth but it does seem rather a coincidence, I shall have to look into that.

Best regards,

Jacqui

not so much of a co-incidence, there were 5 howarths in the 24th battalion (  also an oldham battalion)  ;D

Thanks, Harribobs

Guess there must have been a lot of Howarths living in that area at that time.
