Coach & Horses Inn, Southampton
« on: Thursday 05 October 06 20:52 BST (UK) »
Can anyone with local knowledge of Southampton help me to identify where the Coach & Horses Inn was in Southampton. My cousin's great great grandfather was a brewer there in 1838, although he had moved on by the time of the 1841 census. I guess the building has long gone, but we would like to be able to visit the site if it can be traced. I can't find any reference to the precise location, although I strongly suspect it is in the Spa Road area of the city from the enumerator's description of his round in the census. It certainly isn't the current pub of that name in Cadnam a few miles to the west.

Many thanks in advance, Peter

According to Pigot's Directory of Hampshire 1828  there was a Coach and Horses in Above Bar, Southampton.  James SHERRY was living there.

And in 1836 it was G Quick who was listed there.  Above Bar Street still found via Streetmap.

The centre of Southampton was heavily bombed during WW2.  It is unlikely to have survived.

I live just down the road from Above Bar and I know that there are at least 2 pubs in that street. I shall make some enquiries for you.

That's really helpful. Thanks very much to all of you. It was a bit much to have expected it to survived the war and modern developers, but it will still be good to walk down Above Bar Street knowing the family did the same all those years ago.

Hi Peter

I came across a Southampton City Council web site showing historic maps. It's really good, I've used it a lot. Maybe the same as Gjil's from previous post but if you PM your maill addy, I'll let you have the link. As a bit of a newbie I guess you can't post links on this site ??? I did have a quick look but couldn't find the Coach and Horses but there are a number of pubs in the area so it could have changed names!

Hi nickgar,

Of course you may post links here that help others - that's what this is all about.  Please post the link for us all to see!  :)
