Conaway
« on: Thursday 05 October 06 22:15 BST (UK) »
Hello,
This is a first attempt to find Irish relatives.  I have Margaret Conaway, born 1853.  She married in Whitehaven, Cumberland, in 1874 (to Joseph Kirkbride).  Her father was William Conaway, a joiner.
In one census, she lists her place of birth as Newcastle, County Down.  I can't find her in the 1871 census.  However, family lore said that they first lived in the Isle of Mann..... so...... I'm guesing that they didn't arrive in England until after 1871 but have no idea when she/they actually left Ireland.
I'd be very grateful for any help or advice.

Best wishes,
Jackie

Hello BallyaltikilliganG (phew!),
Firstly, thank you so much for the trouble you've taken.

I've got Margaret's marriage certificate - I think the  10b 388 might be a transcriber's error?  In the 1881 census, Whitehaven, she has a daughter, Savelia, aged six, Mary Ann, aged 4 and David, 2 yrs.  Savelia is not on any later census.
Margaret is still alive on the 1901 census, living in Hensingham, Whitehaven, but husband Joseph is not listed.

The Conways you found, with mother Cathrine Rogan, is very odd:-  Margaret Conaway's grandaughter goes on to marry a Rogan!  Until I saw the RosDavies site, I had assumed that Conaway was a mistake by the census enumerator because Conway has travelled down as a middle name in my family.

I just don't have enough information to trace her back into Ireland, do I?

Thank you very much for your efforts.  It was interesting to see where you've searched as I've really no idea where to start with the Irish side.
Best wishes,
Jackie

Jackie,

You can find a short explanation of the surname variations in NOTE 3 to Lord Edward CONWAY's Last Will & Testament.

http://www.lisburn.com/books/historical_society/volume6/volume6_1.html#edward

Four CONWAY brothers went in to Ireland with Robert BLENNERHASSETT.  They took over Killorglin castle in Co. Kerry, renaming it CONWAY castle.

Ref: "The Conway Letters", readable online at Amazon.

They derive from a North Wales family.
