Hi Jenn

Many of the early church marriage records contain very little. What you have is presumably ALL the information that was in the church register - and that is all that will exist.

I have an 1837 marriage from the Scots Church in Sydney & it only contains the name of the couple & that he was from Parramatta, she was from Sydney. Plus witness names & the misister. My lass was 16 years old - not a mention of that or her being "under age". I also have an 1873 marriage from NSW & even though after civil registration, it contains very little more.

Looking on the AVRI the church is given as
Sydney; Sydney, Pitt Street, Independent (Congregational) - which is also given in the NSW list.

The registers are mainly held by the NSW BDM registry.

If you read through the information on the website related to the 150 years of registration
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/celebrate/index.html

is gives some history of how and when they obtained the information (and is an interesting read)

Hello
thanks  Bob  very  nice  stuff

and  Trish  thanks  -  why  I asked  if  more  info  could  be  had  is  that  on  the  marriage transcription
next to Religion   is  the words   "contained in  the Independant Church Register"
so  could  that  mean  that  the actual  register  could contain  that information?

regards Jenn

Hello

Also  have  had  no  joy  in finding  eithers  arrival  in  the colonies   I do  know that as a  married  couple  they  had  one child  in NSW  then  took  themselves off to  South  Australia   I having been  trying especially  to  find Ann Watts parents  as  her sister Sarah  married  my gggdf Henry Edsall in adelaide  no  parents  recored there either.

only way  i found  the connection  is  that  Annie Smith nee watts  is  buried  in  the same grave as  henry and sa rah  and  a grandchild of ann and james smiths

Hi Jenn

I would assume it meant that the marriage details were contained in that particular register - hence, the couple probably belonged to the said Independent Congregational Church. Next to Religion mine says Presbyterian but there was a place on the Scots Church register that they had to declare that they were members of the Presbyterian Church. The Congregationalists probably didn't have such a requirement.

There are many shipping lists into NSW not online but searchable at places like the NSW archives. I found one of the above couple on a microfilm of a set of card files from NSW, that is at the Qld State Library. Said library is now closed for a couple of months, but if you want to remind me in the new year, I'll have a look. I have never found a shipping record for the lass of my 1837 marriage, but have a copy of a diary written by her father, so do know the details of the trip.

I would recommend a research trip to Sydney  ;D  ;D

Hi! I had this problem with  my ggrandma's 1852 marriage in tumut, NSW, and I got the death certificate for when she died 17 years later and this had her parents names and where she was born. Googling and then searching the historical index of the NSW births deaths and marriages registry gave the death and then I paid the 25dollars for the certificate. good luck. the amount of information is variable. My ggrdma was not registered as a birth but I got a baptismal certificate for her from the nsw registry.....
