Pigott - Nottingham
« on: Friday 13 October 06 12:32 BST (UK) »
I'm researching my father's family, the Cutts from Newark. Elizabeth Cutts, born c1855, had two children, Emma b1874 and Charles b1876. They were registered with their father's surname. He is shown as Henry Pigott, an iron dresser/foundry worker. After the birth of Charles he disappears. The children revert to their mother's name, and are brought up by their maternal grandparents.

The family story is that Henry was a gypsy, who disappeared after the babies were born and was never seen again. The family say that despite the children's birth certificate that gives Elizabeth's name as Pigott, the couple never married. This is all that is known of him. I'm hoping that someone on this board will recognise the name and maybe make a link. Several of us researching this family would be delighted if we could find him - it's a real brick wall. We have many illegitimate children on the family tree, but the fact that Henry gave these two his surname, and actually registered the births himself does suggest he was quite involved with Elizabeth and his children.

Any help, advice or suggestions would be gratefully received. Thank you.
Lesley

What about the Henry PIGGOTT living at St Leonard (Newark) age 26 a "moulder" (born Derbyshire) in the 1881 census RG11/3377 folio 8 page 9 ???

Hi Casalguidi

I have seen that  - it's one of those frustrating entries that you can't prove either way, because that Henry seems to be living alone. I'm not sure whether foundry workers could be called moulders - I've not met the term before, but it would help if there was a connection.

I've got this census entry on my 'maybe' pile. Am keeping my fingers crossed that there'll be a Pigott family who can claim my Henry so I can take the search another step further.

I appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hi Lesley

Yes, there were "moulders" in the iron industry.  Unfortunately the 1881 census appears to attribute Henry's occupation of "moulder" as an unspecified occupation (22/2) http://privatewww.essex.ac.uk/~matthew/work/occlass.htm ie. it wasn't specified on the original return which type of moulder he was.  There were also moulders in the brickfields.

Andrew has given us a good indication of what an iron moulder did http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,50473.msg348395.html#msg348395

One problem is, if the 1881 Henry is mine, it would put his birth about 1855. If I could find a Henry Pigott born about then I would send for his birth cert, which MIGHT give me a clue as to the family. However, I can't find a Henry Pigott born in Derbyshire about 1855.

The name is of course easily mis-spelled, and probably easily misheard if the speaker has a strong accent.

I'd be interested to know whether anyone has come across Pigott as a Romany name?
