Sussex Emigrants to New Zealand 1839-42
« on: Thursday 19 February 04 23:05 GMT (UK) »
In 1996 whilst completing my Local History Certificate at The University of Sussex, one of the modules covered Poverty and Emigration and we received many handouts to illustrate the text of that particular lecture.
One of those handouts was a list of 106 Emigrants to New Zealand under the New Zealand Companys scheme for Free and assisted passages 1839-42 ; surprisingly much of this impetus towards emigration came from the poor law authorities themselves.

Here is that list;

Chris,

Thought you mind me interested to know that the Furminger family mention in your post have turned out to be related to my line. I followed a few links to some posting sites in New Zealand and Australia and found a Furminger posting regarding this family. It turns out he is a cousin x times removed living in Sussex. He has provided me with data on 6 generations of the family tree back to the mid 1600's in Brede and one in America.

So a big thanks for posting the contents of that leaflet.
