Another pair of eyes needed!!
« on: Monday 16 October 06 21:25 BST (UK) »
Hi

Could somebody try and re-read the transcription on the 1851 census of John Graham b1837 in Cumberland?  It's been transcribed as Preston, Lucester, Cumbelrland, England.  His mother Mary was born in Cleator Moor, and his father was born in Carlisle.  I think it's highly likely that he was born in Cumberland, but can't make out the first part.

I thought it might be Preston Street, but I changed my mind.

On the 1841 census, John has two sisters both born in Whitehaven, 8 and 10 years older than him.  So it looks like he was born somewhere in Cumberland.

Thank you

Rosemary

Hi Rosemary

What a stinker  :o

Looks like two words but I can't make it fit anywhere obvious - Cumberland or otherwise.

There is a baptism on IGI for a John Graham, son of William & Mary, 27/11/1836 at Holy Trinity, Whitehaven, if that helps  :-\

Good luck tracking him down!

Hi Rosemary
That is pretty bad, isn't it!!  :o

I think the word starts with "B".  It's similar to another clear B further down the page.  the start of the word looks to me like "Butter"  ???

Also, mother's birthplace doesn't look like "Cleator".  It seems to end in "en".

Hmmm... ??? ;D

Mother's birthplace is, I think, Alston Moor.

I had a look in the Gazetteer for Cumberland on GENUKI:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CUL/Where/index.html

There is a place by the name of Buttermere, but that doesn't look like John's birthplace  :-\

Could his birthplace be "Preston Quarter"?

You could be right there Prue!!!  Thank you.  That would fit in with the baptism at Trinity Church

Mary, John's mother is on the 1861 census as being born in Clenta, Cumberland.  Many people put Cleator, rather than Cleator Moor.

Thanks everybody

Rosemary
