Stewardson Emigration
« on: Tuesday 17 October 06 12:26 BST (UK) »
Hi List,
I have a William Stewardson emmigrated to US from England somewhere between 1817 and 1824. He settled in Nelson County Virginia and would probably have sailed from Liverpool - his home town was Asby in Westmorland. He was probably listed as a farmer and born around 1778. I am interested to find if his wife was with him - Mary she was born around 1776.
Is there any way of looking up emigrants from England as early as this & if so is anyone able to do this for me.

In the 1850 Census his wife is listed as Sarah. Are there any earlier Censuses for Nelson County that any one could look him up for me please
Thank you
Judy

Are you sure he was in Nelson county? There is a William Stewardson as head of household in the 1840 census in St Annes  Town ship,  Albemarle  County, Virginia  (neighboring Nelson county)

The 1840 does not list individuals by name, just head of household and number of persons in age ranges by gender. no occupation.

1 male- 5-10 years
1male- 10-15 years
1 male- 15-20 years
1 male 50-60 years

2 females under age 5
1 female- 5-10 years
1 female- 10-15 years
1 female- 15-20 years
1 female 40-50

Here is a link for the VA dept of health and librbaries for a death record search.
http://www.vdh.state.va.us/vitalrec/gene.asp

A law requiring the systematic statewide recording of births and deaths was passed by the General Assembly on April 11 1853. Every commissioner of revenue registered births and deaths in his district annually and forwarded the information to the clerk of court, who then supplied the information to the state Auditor of Public Accounts. This law continued in effect until 1896. The Auditor turned the lists over to the Bureau of Vital Statistics in 1918 and the registers were later transferred to the state archives.  http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/vital/

Here is a link to the Stewardson Cemetery which only lists William Stewardson and his daughter, Sarah, daughter of William and Sallie M Stewardson.

http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/nelson/cemeteries/c-ste01.txt

In 1860, it looks like Sarah is living in Montgomery County, Missouri with the 2 sons, Samuel and John.  In 1870 Samuel  appears in the adjoining county of Callaway with wife, Catherine, and in 1880 he and his wife are still in Callaway County, Missouri.  The interesting thing is that the 1880 census is the first to ask the birthplace of the parents.  Samuel's states that he was born in Virginia, his father in England, and his mother in Virginia.  The 1850 and 1860 census  each state that Sarah was born in Virginia.

According to the cemetery inscription, William died Jan 23, 1861, so I wonder why Sarah appears in 1860 with the boys, but William doesn't appear anywhere.  Maybe it is a miss transcription of the headstone.

Hello All,
Thank you for all your help with William Stewardson's first wife, who I hope was Mary.

I now know that he had a second marriage in Albemarle Co. Virginia he married Sarah M. Wingfield on April 10, 1827.

This appears to be a second marriage for him.

William is on the on the 1830 Albemarle Co. census there are 2 males under 5, 1 male under 10;
2 females under 5, 2 females under 10, 1 female under 15.

So I am now wanting to know how to go about finding out about the death of his first wife or birth of his children to his first wife - one of them being Jane Stewardson born around 1823.

I have a reply as follows "The only other suggestion I have is for someone to research the records in the courthouse.  If William Stewardson had land, maybe there is a deed listing his first wife's name.  I do not live in Nelson Co. or I would volunteer to do so."

This is a big favour but if any one can help I would be very grateful

Judy

Thank you all very much for all the information.
I have now contacted the lady RAOGK and will wait to hear if she can help at all.

I will post a note on the Westmorland site to see if there are any Stewardsons out there researching as I have gathered quite a bit on them & would like it to be of use to someone.
