Searching for any information about the family and descendants of my great great grandfather,Duncan Livingstone McAllum,born3 July 1817 at Carville.His parents were,Duncan McAllum and Eliza Donkin(her parents names,John and Priscilla Donkin)Duncan and Eliza were married,30 Sept 1815 at Tynemouth Parish church.Duncan Livingstone McAllum (occupation,accountant)married at age 26 Phoebe Jane Fenwick born abt 1826 at Stanhope Durham was the daughter of William and Ann Fenwick.Children of Duncan and Phoebe were,Annie Mary McAllum born,1848,Willian Fenwick McAllum born,1851,Duncan McAllum(my great grandfather)born 1852,Francis Jane McAllum born,1857,Fredric McAllum born,1858,Eliza McAllum born,1858,Phoebe Jane McAllum born,1863,Charles McAllum born,1865,Lucy McAllum born,1867,Percy McAllum born,1870.Both Duncan and William Fenwick McAllum emmigrated to N.Z but I have no dates.William Fenwick McAllum married Margret Elizabeth Snowball and had a number of children before emmigrating.Duncan Livingstone McAllum died Dec 1883 at Coxlodge,Gosforth Newcastle.Would there be a probate I wonder and if so would it have his parents names included?Any help with these names gratefully received.Gereon

Hello Trini,thanks for your interest .I am trying to put some sort of family history together for my two grandsons.My father died when I was a teenager and didnt speak much about his family.The few things I do remember were the McAllums came from Scotland,they were related to the Livingstones by marriage and that there had been two McAllums who were preachers.As I stumbled through the maze of internet sites and certificates,all the McAllums I found came from Norhumberland going back to the John McAllum marriage to Eliza Donkin in 1815 at Tynemouth.I did notice listings on Ancestry about McAllums but not being a member was unable to access it.Yes please to that information,and I will put something on the Lookup page.Thanks for the advice.

Hello gereon

I started to do some "digging" for your ancestors and I then noticed the point that you made to Trini about Ancestry. You can search the 1881 census and the births marriages and deaths databases completely free of charge. You just have to register with your name and email address.

If you were to look in the marriage indexes for the surname McAllum and select Northumberland in the county box you would find a few of the females and their possible husbands.

You could then search the 1881 census for all of the McAllum names on your list (substituting where necessary the possible husbands’ surnames for the ladies). From this, as well as having a bit of fun and satisfaction from doing it, you would find a lot of information about the names on your list, all for free.

You would then be in a better position to post specific (shorter) enquiries on the lookup board to obtain census details for other years that are not free to view.

Just a suggestion, trying to be helpful.

I am sure that you will find all of the 1881 census pages and the BMD items yourself but here are a few bits of information from other years that you might want. 

In 1871 Duncan Livingstone and Phoebe Jane and all of the children that you mention (except Annie Mary) are together at 2 Gosforth North Villas. (Castle Ward, Ponteland RG10/5137 Folio 30 Page 15)

Annie Mary is a servant in the household of John and Francis Crimsher at 7 Esplanade Street, Bishopwearmouth. (Sunderland, South Bishopwearmouth RG10/5006 Folio 37 Page 67)

I cannot see Duncan (born c1852) on the 1881 census so I would guess that he emigrated between 1871 and 1881. William Fenwick (born c1850) is on the 1881 but I cannot see him in 1891 so I would guess that he emigrated between 1881 and 1891.
