which lady?
« on: Wednesday 18 October 06 14:56 BST (UK) »
Ihave 1901 census details on 2 elsie cook. One is my grandma, who married in 1915. Born in 1895/6 and possibly died in 1928. My problem is deciding which one fits the bill.
Also i cannot find details of her death. Any ideas?

I presume the two entries that you are referring to are the ones living at Milligan Road and Clarendon Street.
Do you have Elsie's marriage certificate? That will (hopefully) give you the first name of her father which would be a good first step.

So what was her married name?
It's then a matter of looking through the registers to find the correct reference and applying for a certificate.

Her birth is more tricky. There are lots of Elsie Cook's in the birth indexes (did you know you can search the full B M & D indexes free on Ancestry at present?)

but JUST looking at 1896 and 1897, and JUST noting those that are plain Elsie without a middle name, and JUST those in the 7a area - there are these to choose from:

1896 Jan/Feb/Mar Leicester area ref 7a 273

1896 A/M/J Glanford B area ref 7a 692

1896 OND Glanford B area 7a 695

1897 JAS Grantham 7a 474

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Crikey, I go away to make dinner and you've got nearly all of the information you need  :P
Just to say that the Wightman that LizB found is a Thomas C Wightman.
If that ties up with what you know, then I think you'll have to get their marriage cert. to go any further.
