Looking for George HARDY born 1836-1839
« on: Wednesday 18 October 06 19:31 BST (UK) »
I hit a brick wall like we all do and wondered if anyone could help fill in some gaps for me..

I am trying to find information on George Hardy, born between 1836-1839 in Pillsdon, Dorset.  He was married to Jane Dodd (1846-) who was born in Braunston, Northamptonshire.

They had 3 children, Florence (1874-1937 born in Bradpole, Dorset), Ann (1876- born in Melplash, Dorset) and Mary (1877-1877).

By the 1881 Census Jane Dodd had remarried to John Foster, who was my great-grandfather.  Florence and Ann were living with them at the time in Northamptonshire.

I am having trouble tracing what happened to George.  I don't have access at this time to the earlier censuses, but I assume that as the children are living with Jane that he most likely died.

I would like to try and trace back into George Hardy's parentage as well as into the descendants of Florence and Ann, but as is usual with girls it is a lot harder due to the last name changing.

There is supposedly a link to Thomas Hardy somewhere, presumably from George's parents or siblings, but I have not yet been able to prove that.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I am researching the following families:
Hurst / Payne - Leicestershire / Warwickshire / Worcestershire
Toon(e) - Leicestershire
Batchelor / Foster - Warwickshire / Northamptonshire
Hardy - Dorset

My web site has the family tree showing.  I am researching primarily the Payne, Hurst, Foster and Batchelor lines in the Midlands.

Well you guys all just amaze me - thank you so much.

The marriage of John Foster to Jane in Rugby in 1880 sounds right as does the death of George in 1878.  Explains why he is not in the 1881 Census but the children are living with John and Jane.  Thanks Tazzie.

As far as George's birth, my initial thoughts after reading your 1st post Cheryl was that they put Pilsdon as nobody wanted to write "Piddletrenthide" LOL!  Yes Dorset is full of wonderful names like that.

Between you Chreyl and Frances I think you have found the family, so now I have the names of the parents and siblings.  Amunition to document and research further.  I truly appreciate what the 3 of you have come up with.

Since I posted the original message I have been searching through the Dorset genealogy sites non-stop and come up with nothing.  I come back to Rootschat and there is what I need.

I must subscribe to Ancestry at some point, but I only get chances to research every so often, so it's a bit expensive to join for a year and then not use it.  To pay for 14 days also and then only use them once in that period is also not too good.  I need to get my life together so I can spend more time researching.

Thanks again for your great help.
I hope to have more information up on my family web site by the weekend.
