Going from FTM 2005 to 2006
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 17:11 BST (UK) »
I bought FTM 2005 last year and finally started using it about 3 months ago.  My boyfriend has bought me the Who do you think you are FTM 2006.  Do I just install it over the top of 2005 or should I un install 2005?

Many thanks in advance

Nicky

dont have 2006, I'd think it was smart enough to sort out the install .... but err on the side of caution and deinstall 2005 first - just go through Control Panel -> Add or Remove Program and find its entry.

Just as a precaution also check that you have back up copies of your family information files that you may have created before uninstalling the older version as some uninstall utilities will remove all data files

Nicky
I installed 2006 over 2005 and everything went perfectly.
Mind you I copied all of my FTW files to another place before I started just in case anything went wrong.  :P
Is the 2006 version that you have a full version or does it have limited functions?
If you do need to revert to the 2005 version you won't be able to open any files created or read in the 2006 version.

Thank you all,

I took the advice and backed my tree up to CD before I un installed 2005.  2006 has gone in fine and I have managed to merge another file that a contact sent me.

Many thanks again :)

Hi Nicky, Falkryn raises a good point overall about your FTM files.

In my 2005, the default is to store data (.FTW .FBK etc) in Windows 'Documents & Settings' Folder under my Logon/User ID. Frequent use will result in high fragmentation of this very active XP folder ...

Might be an idea to move these to a seperate Folder - or even HD if you have a 2nd HD ?

And the .FBK (backups) elsewhere again !

I have moved them to their own folder called Family Tree within my documents, is this enough?

sounds good - at least its moved them away from the over-active XP Docs & Settings Folder.

Did you also specify where you want backups taken ?

I think so.  I will have to check once I get home.  What I have been doing though is copying my entries to my tree on Ancestry.co.uk.  So at least if it all goes pearshaped I have it there too.  Not that I am paranoid or anything.....lol

This will sound sad as well, but you know on FTM when it flashes up 'you have now got 400 names in your tree would you like to send an entry to one world tree?) I then copy it to disk.

Is it worth sending the info to one world tree do you know?
