1901 Census - Ballarat, Victoria
« on: Thursday 26 October 06 09:49 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone.  Is there such a thing as a 1901 Census for Ballarat, Victoria.  I am looking for something like the UK 1901 Census.  If so, is it available to view on line.  (I am in the UK).  I'm not sure how the Census were conducted in Oz or if it shows as much details as the UK.  I do hope someone can help me.  Thanking you

No, no census - they were destroyed after stats extracted - however we do have electoral rolls and post office directories.  Also excellent BDM indexes that name parents on birth and death, and also cemetery information.

Post your names with plenty of info about parentage, spouses etc, and we will see what we can come up with!

Hello Dee

Eastern Australian BDM indexes show parent names, so it is possible to work out family groups via birth/death records. (Births are not usually available much past 1920). Death records are available in Vic to 1985, NSW to 1975 and Qld to 1964 or 5). I will wait to be corrected  :D

Thank you for your info.  Where or how do I find these BMD pages?  Are they on the net?  You will have to bear with me if these questions seem silly.  I am just starting out on a search using the Australian facilities available.  It will take me a while but I will finally get there.  Thank you for being patient with me.  Best regards to you all

Hi Dee  :D

You can access the historical indexes for Victoria online at http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/servlet/bdm_home

you need to pay to view the results of a search but the good thing is that if you find who you are looking for, you can pay online and download the certificate then and there.

NSW BDMs are at http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm  - free searchable index and send away for the certificate.

If you are willing to post the details of who you are looking for a number of roots chatters have CDs of the Victorian indexes.

If you see the pinned threads at the top of the Oz board you will also find details of what is available for the different Australian states
