1954 Toronto obituary lookup please
« on: Friday 27 October 06 17:12 BST (UK) »
I'm not sure how difficult this is going to be, but I am seeking the death date, burial place and hopefully obituary for Sidney (or perhaps Sydney) CANDY who died in Toronto in 1954. He was born about 1919, so would have been 35.

I know that he was a car salesman, and that he lived at Scarborough.

I am hoping that he might be buried in a family allotment, perhaps with his mother Maud Candy who died in 1953 and is buried at York.

Any help would be much appreciated. Not sure where to start with this one.

Thanks for your help.

I looked for the death notice of Sydney, in the Toronto Star "Pages of the Past", but could not find it. I did however find the notice for his mother Maud in 1953.

Thursday, January 15, 1953
CANDY, Maud -- At the home of her daughter. 10A Munro Park Ave., on Thursday, Jan. 15, 1953. Maud Banks, wife of the late Charles A. Candy and dear mother of Mrs. Wm. Shaw (Dorothy) Jack of Buffalo, New York. Charles of Vancouver, British Columbia and Sydney of King, Ontario. Resting at Humphrey Funeral Chapel 2245 Yonge Street (at Eglinton) Service in the chapel (Saturday morning) at 11 o'clock. Interment York Cemetery, Lansing.

The notice says Sydney was living in King, Ontario.

One year late a "Memorial" was placed in the paper, by son George and Family. (Not mentioned in original notice."

Friday, January 15, 1954
CANDY -- In loving memory of my mother  Maude Candy who passed away January 15, 1953. While you dear mother rest and sleep, your loving memory we'll always keep. -- Ever remembered by son George and Family.

Dear Janice

Many thanks indeed for these very helpful suggestions. I am already following up the York Cemetery via Mt Pleasant. They take 12 weeks to respond to these requests, but I am hopeful that I might find  some other family members in the same or adjacent graves.

Not much luck with BC because the records stop some years ago and don't come up to the present day; and the local library in King has no record of any Candy in the 1950s.

Especially grateful for the information about George Candy. It seems that he wasn't mentioned in 1953 obituary, so maybe there was some tension in the family when Maud died. I wonder where George and his family were living?

Many thanks again for all those helpful suggestions and insights.

Kind regards

Philip Candy
