1820 settlers
« on: Sunday 29 October 06 12:12 GMT (UK) »
I want to find a letter written by Sarah Cadle appealing for financial assistance after the flood disaster of 1823 in the Albany Settlement.
I have not found it in Nat. Archive of SA so has anyone any ideas where I might find it?

background info:-
She arrived on Ocean with husband (2/4)  John Cadle and 4 children April 1820. They initially settled with Howards party's  plot at Salem Hills. John died in the floods of Oct 1823 leaving Sarah Cadle in a desperate situation with numerous children to care for. William Howard helped her draft a plea for financial assistance to a Relief Fund .
She had 500 rix- dollars allocated to her, ( 1 rix-dollar was about 1 shilling and 6 pence) but  for some reason the local authorities simply dishonoured the bills when they were presented.
I cannot find which fund this was as I believe there were two. One set up by Somerset the very unpopular Governor, (which I have a vague idea was shunned by the settlers, but I may be wrong)  and another set up by well wishers, which I believe was The Society for the Relief of Distressed Settlers.
Sarah had control of John’s property but 9 months after she had pleaded for assistance she still had received no help.
The Society for the Relief of Distressed Settlers was able to help her out with a small loan of 50 rix-dollars.

Where is that  letter of appeal likely to be?
Any advance on zero info would be a distinct improvement!!!

Don't think for a moment that you want to spend £1500 but have a look at
http://www.polybiblio.com/ximenes/B5129.html
Maybe you could find out if this book is in the Cory Library in Grahamstown or somewhere similar, then try to find someone to do a lookup

£1500 you are joking! and I thought R500 for the much mentioned Pamela Barnes Book was bad enough! I have never wanted a book that badly and Im a bibliophile...
Now that link is really useful! Thanks Sue

Have you had a look at the 1820 Settler pages at www.genealogyworld.net? Transcriptions of Settler Correspondence have been provided by Sue Mackay - there isn't a CADLE letter under the 'C' names but the source may give you a clue as to where to find such a letter in The National Archives at Kew. You could ask Sue directly -
contact me through my web pages above for details.

I assume you have seen the entry on CADLE, George Ellis (son of John Henry) in Shelagh Spencer's volume 4? This includes a brief bio of John Henry and family as well as much on George, who was the child born posthumously after John Henry drowned 1823.

Sarah's letter is not included, but you might be interested to read the 1823 Report of the Committee for Distressed Settlers which I have just transcribed and put on line at

Many thanks.
I recently read that the railway siding at Harpers is on what was originally the village plot given to John Cadle. Too small to find on-line I suspect.
I also found out that Manley Flats is what the Salem Hills area is now called.  I found some amateur photographs on line to give an idea of just what the place looks like. (I Google Manley Flats)
AND if anybody watched the series in UK on BBC2 Safari School that was set on the Shamawi Games reserve which I realised  lies between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown ...another piece to the jigsaw for those wanting to know what the land was/is actually like!
