I want to find a letter written by Sarah Cadle appealing for financial assistance after the flood disaster of 1823 in the Albany Settlement.
I have not found it in Nat. Archive of SA so has anyone any ideas where I might find it?
background info:-
She arrived on Ocean with husband (2/4) John Cadle and 4 children April 1820. They initially settled with Howards party's plot at Salem Hills. John died in the floods of Oct 1823 leaving Sarah Cadle in a desperate situation with numerous children to care for. William Howard helped her draft a plea for financial assistance to a Relief Fund .
She had 500 rix- dollars allocated to her, ( 1 rix-dollar was about 1 shilling and 6 pence) but for some reason the local authorities simply dishonoured the bills when they were presented.
I cannot find which fund this was as I believe there were two. One set up by Somerset the very unpopular Governor, (which I have a vague idea was shunned by the settlers, but I may be wrong) and another set up by well wishers, which I believe was The Society for the Relief of Distressed Settlers.
Sarah had control of John’s property but 9 months after she had pleaded for assistance she still had received no help.
The Society for the Relief of Distressed Settlers was able to help her out with a small loan of 50 rix-dollars.
Where is that letter of appeal likely to be?
Any advance on zero info would be a distinct improvement!!!
