The areas for the 1841 census were a bit odd ... Whitehaven was part of St Bees, Cockermouth part of Brigham, and Carlisle was split between St Marys and St Cuthberts.  So they were living in Irish St, Whitehaven,  which was part of St Bees District.

Ages in the 1841 census were supposed to be rounded down, so 25 in 1841 ought to mean 25-29 years ... thus Alice's age is consistent in both censuses but William's isn't.

Hi Geoff,
Margaret in 1841 just has N after her name -which means she wasn't born in the county she was living in.

On the 1841 you just get Yes or No for p.ob.-unless it is another country - S for Scotland, I for Ireland

Carole and I both got our 1841 info from the same census -I put the Corkhill family in, as it looked as if they were living in the same premises and they may feature somewhere in future research-or the premises may have housed 2 dwellings.

Will have a look on later census to see where Alice stated she was born.
I have come across before where the p.o.b. given on a census is sometimes where they lived last or where they grew up.

Please see my original reply - 1851 census - Margaret was b IOM as was Alice.  That is why I queried the birthplace of Scotland when I showed the 1841 census details
