Look up - John Fargie Lyle
« on: Wednesday 01 November 06 17:28 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find details of my ggrandfather John Fargie Lyle on the 1901 Census he is living in Edinburgh but his birthplace is given as America, his father, Quentin, is not on the census and I would be interested to know if he died in America resulting in the family returning to America.

Thanks
Louise

Hi there

It's not clear whose death you are looking for - John or Quentin? Though I gather you don't yet know where in America John was born?

You need to give us more information if possible -  John Fargie Lyle is not a usual name - however, John F.  LYLE is!

Ages and place of birth as far as you are able.
Full names of all family members and ages

Who else was on the 1901 Scotland Census with John?

And who is the Quentin Fargie Lyle who married in Wandsworth London 1905?
A brother? The father?

If we are to find anyone in any Census US or UK, or passenger lists etc etc, sometimes we can easier find one family member which may lead to the more elusive among them. ;D

Unfortunately I don't know where in America John was born. It's a bit of a long shot but I would like to know about Quentin's death and John's birth.

John was born in 1889, America
Quentin was born 1857 Edinburgh, Scotland

On the 1901 Census the following are listed.

Mary Fargie Lyle, b.1859 Edinburgh, Scotland
Quentin (Fargie - I need to confirm this) Lyle, b.1883 Edinburgh, Scotland
Lizzie Andrew Lyle, b.1885 Edinburgh, Scotland
Jane McClure Lyle, b.1887 Edinburgh, Scotland
John Fargie Lyle, b.1889 Scotland

From the births of the children the family must have moved to America after Jane was born in 1887 and obviously before John was born in 1889, returning to Edinburgh before the census was taken in 1901.

Here's Mum and the children arrived US 1888 - Dad probably went ahead, as was very common, but haven't found him yet.

SS Anchoria
Departed Glasgow
Arrived New York  - 4th June 1888
Mrs Mary LYLE 29
Quintin LYLE 5
Lizzie LYLE 3
Jane LYLE 8 months

They travelled in 2nd Cabin, I think they had 7 pieces of luggage/
They were citizens of Scotland.
Their destination was the USA
Their last Residence was Edinburgh.

Also - I'd say the son is Quentin Fargie LYLE b 1883 Scotland he  married London 1905 to Lillian Kate NEWMAN - they  had a son Quentin Ernest LYLE in England 1906  - and seemingly went to US later that year, This family is on the US 1920 & 30 in New York and probably 1910 if I can find them. DO you have any of this or want it?

Hi Louise

I haven't found Quentin 1857's death or his entry into US circa 1888 - however - I have found him in a NY directory 1889 and 1890 :

Brooklyn, New York Directories -  1888-1890
Name: Quentin LYLE
Location: 193 Bridge  , Brooklyn, New York
Occupation: Bookbinder
Year: 1889, 1890

I know from seeing the 1881 Census for Scotland, where he was as yet unmarried, that he was a Bookbinder by trade. It'd extremely unfortunate that the US 1891 Census was all but destroyed by fire.

So it looks highly possible your John, son of Quentin & Mary - was born in or around Brooklyn New York, or at least in New York.

This website has an Index of NY deaths 1891 to 1910 and I cannot find Quentin 1857  on it:
http://www.italiangen.org/databaselist.stm

Will post up what I find, as mentioned above:  you may be able to track a living relative stateside via descendants of Quentins 1883 and 1906, who may know what became of Quentin 1857.

Hi,
I noticed you were looking up John Fargie Lyle 1889, who married Jessi Esson Croall.

Well, doing my research he shows up on my Fargie family tree. It looks like his grandfather is John Fargie 1837 who is married to Elizabeth Andrew. John is the brother to my gggrandfather William Fargie 1835 who married a Catherine. I am a descendant from their son Robert Fargie 1866, his son David Fargie is my grandfather.

John Fargie and Elizabeth had a daughter Mary Fargie, 1859 who married a Quentin Lyle, 1857

I would be interested in discussing further and comparing notes and info.
