Apprenticeship indentures - West Sussex RO please?
« on: Thursday 02 November 06 10:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello Sussexians (is there a name?)

Augustine LEWIS was born on the 26th July 1880 in Littleham, Devon, mother Margaret HOOKINGS, father unknown.  On his marriage certificate he states father Jack LEWIS cabinet maker.  No such person has ever been located (though see attempts on the Devon board).

Augustine (Gus) is known to have been apprenticed, possibly to a tailor or outfitter in East Grinstead, Sussex.  No indentures have been found in Exeter, but I am hoping that they might have survived at the East Grinstead end - and that they will reveal all about Gus' daddy.

Would anyone be visiting the West Sussex record office in the near future and hence able to look for the indentures for me?

Gus' son is keen to know - he has waited 87 years for the information, so I don't think he is being impatient, but SOON would be good!

He and I would be sooo grateful for an assistance in this matter.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

p.s. we have Gus on censuses already.

Hi Arranroots,
I think it might be worth your while to contact the WSRO & inquire as to whether they have apprenticship records.
http://www.westsussex.gov.uk/ccm/navigation/libraries-and-archives/record-office/  I don't remember seeing any when I've been there & they don't appear to be listed on their collections.  To the best of my knowledge these records are lodged at the Guildhall library in London regardless of county.

Thank you Jane - I hadn't heard that before, so I will certainly ask them in Sussex and see what they say.
