Brighton Baptisms 1850 to 1860
« on: Thursday 02 November 06 13:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I would be very grateful if anyone who has access to the  PRs could possibly find details of any of the following brothers(I think).

Ebenezer Doomsday (Dumsday, Dumstay) born c 1859
Charles         "                                             born c 1857
James           "                                              born c 1853
 All born Brighton

In 1861 they are living with the Sinnock family in Kemp Town, Brighton  as boarders. I am trying to find out if there was a family connection so would like to find the boys' parents .possibly from Baptism records..
Sadly it looks as though they all died young before 1879.
The birth dates are from the census.

   Many thanks
          Cathy :)

If pos it would be good to clarify the name first.

For example there are NO Doomsday's coming up on the 1881 census.

i looked for Ebenezer's birth, but no registration under Doomsday in 1858-60

Did you see the actual image of them in 1861, or take the name from the index, where they are transcribed as Doomsday?

how do you know they are dead by 1879 - have you found deaths for them? If so what is name then, who registered them, where were they etc etc

I havent go access to baptiosm records, but was trying to pinpoint births in the registration indexes.

Anyone with access to baptism records will, I guess, need a parish.

Hi,   My what a lot of questions!

Yes, i ve seen the actual image and it is Doomsday on the 1861.Possible sighting of Ebenezer on 1881 census...Ebenezer Dumstay (actual image) porter in Brighton

Charles Dumsday(actual image) on 1871
Pauper,Brighton Workhouse, St Peter

Having just decided to persue this line i haven t as yet done too much information gathering and only have possible deaths from Ancestry  Bmd .I havent searched the actual images yet but i will soon and try to find their births.
Sorry its all a bit vague, i just had a moment of inspiration!
I think the surname is probably Dumsday as there are quite a few in Brighton.
Perhaps i should search more and then post again.
Thanks so much for you time
 Best wishes
 Cathy

Sorry for all those questions - I didnt mean to be a pain but I dived in to help and then floundered!!

ANyway, I have had a session looking at births registered in the surname Dumsday. There are several around, obviously a famliy in East Grinstead, Islington, Lewes, to name a few.

however, looking for Ebenezer's, Charles's and James's revealed:

JFM 1850 Ebenezer  - Medway area V 423

AMJ 1853 Charles  - Cuckfield 2b 128

OND1856 James Dawkins - W Ham 4a 35

OND 1860 Charles - W Ham 4a 47

I looked 1850-60

the only Dumsday I found reg in Brighton area in those years was an Edwin in OND 1857 ref 2b 156

There werent any Dumstay's in those years
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex

All BMDs are free to search on ancestry at the moment.  Choose the complete version not the FreeBMD one and just go through every quarter.   If you can find a birth certificate you are away - though it will cost £7!

Hi
Did 10 minutes research and found a Ebenezer DUMSTAY in the 1881 census and he was  born at Brighton 1856  working in a Hotel as a porter and domestic servant, he was also unmarried.
The owner of the hotel was a German by the name of Charles Buchel and had about may be 30 or more people working for him.

I am fairly sure this is your Ebenezer.
Could not find him in the 1901 census possibly because of the var. spellings.
I will look for the other two brothers for you and see what i come up with.

Colin
