Warcop - Farrer
« on: Monday 06 November 06 07:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

Does anyone have access to the Warcop PRs? I have found in the 1851 census:

Thomas Farrer married age 63 Stone mason born Bleatarn WES
Jane Farrer married wife age 64 born Ashby CUM
Isabella dau age 29 born Warcop
Jane granddau age3 born Warcop.

I cannot find the baptism of Thomas in the IGI. It is possible he is the son of Christopher Farrer & Sarah Muncaster. Thomas has a son Christopher (1841 census).

Thanks,

Gillian

Hi Gillian,
Bleatarn is close to Warcop but it is possible that Thomas was baptised elsewhere.  Great Musgrave?  Soulby?  Coverage on the IGI is not full so it is worth looking at any nearby church.
Where did his possible parents marry?
You can get the film of all these parishes to search yourself at your nearest LDS centre if you are not in a position to get to the record office.  As no-one has replied I assume that they do not have access to them.

Hi Andrea,

Christopher Farrer & Sarah Muncaster married 25/12/1787 Warcop.

They had 3 children baptised Warcop:

William 24/01/1790
Elisabeth 17/06/1792
Ann 31/03/1794.

Thomas was b1788 according to 1851 census so looks like their first child.

I have some information that may be about the above William Farrer (b. 1790), but I have no other corroborating evidence. Maybe someone else does(?):

1883 Covington Borough History, Tioga Co., PA-- Tri-County Site
William Farrer, father of Thomas and William Farrer, two well known citizens, is a native of Westmoreland County, England; is in his 94th year, but is able to walk ten miles a day with ease. He came to this county in 1837 and located at Blossburg. He has alternately lived in Blossburg, Liberty and Covington. He was a stone mason and a miner.

William had a daughter Sarah as well (b. 1816 in Wardor). He is buried in Old Settler's Cemetery near Covington, Tioga County, Pennsylvania with this record: "Farrer Wm parish o/ Warecop England born 1789 age 94".

Helo Masterbrass
Welcome to rootschat.     What an interesting snippet.   It is fascinating to see how far these people went around the world but still remembered their roots.

Hello Masterbrass,

Welcome to Rootschat also!!

Very interesting the info re William Farrer! I had searched for him but couldn't find him in the UK.

It certainly looks like my William Farrer. Elisabeth Farrer (my ggg grandmother) b1792 Warcop lived until her 80s despite working hard as her husband died in 1836 and having a large family to bring up on her own!

Happy New Year!

Thank you for the welcome, all. I appreciate it! I have many, many ancestors traced and most have come from England and Wales. Tioga County, PA is quite rural, with rolling hills and forestlands. It was, and is, mined for coal, which drew many 19th century immigrants from England and Wales, as well as many farming families from rural southern NY and New England, whose families almost always came from across the Atlantic in the centuries previous. The Tioga County site is extremely useful if you are researching Central Pennsylvania families.
