Local knowledge: Maidstone
« on: Friday 12 November 04 21:25 GMT (UK) »
I'd welcome information from anyone with local knowledge of Maidstone.

My g-g-grandfather owned a freehold property called "Fant Holme", on Upper Fant Rd. in Maidstone.  I'm wondering if it still exists and, if so, what kind of property it is (it sounds very grand!).

Many thanks

Upper Fant Road still exists, mostly small Victorian terraced houses.  Don't know about Fant Holme.  My map of 1883 shows one large house - Fant House.  Expect there's someone more knowledgable than me.  What name and time period are we looking at?

Thanks bearcat,

The property is referred to in a will dated 1878, and in the 1881 census my g-g-grandfather's sister, Mary Ann Wheeler was resident there.

Cheers

Hi Bearcat (or anyone else with Maidstone knowledge,

Going back to the LDs 1881 census site and toggling through "Previous" and "Next Household", it would seem that Fant Holme would most likely have been No. 133 Upper Fant Rd.  If you happen to be in the area and can check it out, I'd be interested to hear what it's like.  Is it worth trying to contest the will?  ;)

Cheers
