Marske-by-the sea
« on: Wednesday 08 November 06 21:40 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping for a bit of information from you locals! I always knew my family had a connection to Marske and have been trying to track it down. Have just received a birth cert (excellent service from Guisborough registry office as usual) with birthplace Marske in 1894. The address is Medd's Yard and I have managed to find it on the 1891 census. it's listed after Church Street North. Am I right in thinking that would be at the side of The Ship? Any idea where Medd's Yard was or if it's still there, absorbed into a street name? I can only find Medd's Place on the 1881, not sure if it's the same place.  :)

Hi

I lived in Marske all my life, never heard of Medds Yard, there is a large family connected to Saltburn by the same name, used to be medds bakery and garage.  have you tried going to Winkies Castle in Marske, its on the High St, just up from the cobblers, the original cobbler from Marske was the late Jack Anderson and he actually started the little museum, originally I think it was the old police house, its worth a look in it

Good luck

I live in Carlin-How, but have some ancestors that lived at Medds Yard.  My other half is from Marske by Sea and even he hasn't heard of the place.  It's not there now and I can't think of where it would have been. :(

I wrote to the people at the Marske Online website to see if they could shed any light on it but they didn't reply

Thats a shame.  My OH seems to think it would have been behind the church in that area.  But no-one seems to know.  Let me know if you find anything out.
