There's a brief bit on Archibald Smail in a little book I have written by one of my gg great uncles, Thomas Dobson (see below). The book is Reminiscences of Innerleithen & Traquair.

Leithen Mills, some eleven or twelve years ago, were taken over by Messrs Stewart & Ferguson and converted into works for the production of a species of silk yarn, and up to 1893 passed under the name of the Silk Mill. In that year the concern was bought, and after large additions and alterations is now carried on by Mr Walter Smail and his sons as a spinning mill. Mr Smail is the third son of the late Mr Archibald Smail who lived so long at Morningside, Innerleithen.
